The Homefront and the End of War

Total War War was not only on the battlefield, but also for civilians.
Governments took control of the economy, and transformed them to help in the war effort. Rationing is common, everything from steel to butter was limited by the war effort.

Allies Win the War Russia withdraws from the war, and the United States enters on the Allied side. This allows Germany to attempt a final offensive with all forces. A force of 2 million American troops along with other allied forces begin moving towards Germany after Second Battle of Marne.

Meeting at Versailles The war ends with the German Kaiser abdicating his throne on November 9th. 11/11/1918, the war ends, at the eleventh hour. The peace process begins with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

Peace Terms All major decisions of the conference handled by Britain, France, United States, and Italy. Germany and the new Soviet Union not represented. Wilson calls for his plan of fourteen points to guarantee peace process.

Wilson’s Plan, and What they Adopted.
Fourteen Points: 1-5, an end to secret treaties, freedom of the seas, and free trade. 6-13, specific suggestions for creating new nations and borders. 14, a general association of nations to coordinate a world peace.

The Results The French wanted to punish Germany and strip them of war-making powers. Treaty of Versailles finally signed June 28th, 1919. League of Nations created, but it was a weak organization. Germany lost substantial territory, restrictions placed on military, and reparations had to be paid.

New Countries Separate land treaties caused the loss of lands for Central powers. Austria and Hungary separate nations, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia independent as well. Russia had land losses, and Ottoman Empire all but eliminated.

Use of Propaganda Utilized to exert a viewpoint to the war.
