Reference Page Citations

According to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2010), “a critical part of the writing process is helping readers place your contribution in context by citing the researchers who influenced you” (p. 169).

What is a reference page? A list of additional information for the references you cited in-text Provides readers with the information they need to retrieve every source you used in your research A separate page at the end of your paper. Title the page “References” and center the title on the top of the page.

What should I know first? Every resource is different. Therefore, it is not possible to provide examples for every variation or anomaly students may find. The APA manual and the resources on the Center for Writing Excellence provide basic formulas and common examples, but always ask your facilitator if you cannot find the formula for your specific resource. What is most important is that students provide enough information in citations so that readers can locate the resources used, so provide as much information as possible. The following slides provide you with guidelines and a formula for the most common types of reference page citations.

What do I include in a reference page citation? Use the last name and first initials, or username as it appears. Author (or editor, director, producer, username) Include month and date for periodicals. Substitute “n.d.” if there is no date. Date or year Include the section of publication used, such as article title, subheading or chapter title, web page title, television episode, and so forth. Title of work Include the publication: magazine or journal title, book title, website title, television show title, and so forth. Always reference the entire publication, even if you only used one section. If this is a hard copy publication, include the publisher and publishing city and state. After publication name, include edition, issue, italicized volume number, and/or chapter or page numbers (separated by commas and in parentheses) if applicable. If it is an online source, include retrieval information, such as, Retrieved from database name, DOI, or URL. It is no longer necessary to include retrieval date for online sources. How do I format a reference page citation? Alphabetize entries by the first letter in each citation (usually author). Use hanging indent. Double space. Separate each element with a period. Place a period at the end of the citation. Exceptions: Do not place a period between the title and the parenthetical information, or after URL or DOI at the end of a citation. Do not use quotation marks for titles of works on the reference page. Italicize publication titles and volume numbers, such as books, brochure, and periodical titles and volumes. Do not italicize titles of works or sections, such as chapters, article titles, web pages, or edition, issue, and page numbers. Example: Author, A. A. (XXXX). How chai latte became so popular. In A. Editor (Ed.), The history of tea (p. XX). Location: Publisher. Enclose additional publication information in parentheses immediately after the title (edition, report number, volume number).

Page numbers Add after the title if applicable Books and newspapers: (pp. XX) All other periodicals: XX Capitalization Books, websites, and all other nonperiodicals: Capitalize the first letter of the first word of the work title and sections, if applicable. Also capitalize proper nouns within titles, such as company names or people’s names, and first letters of words after dashes, colons, and semicolons. Example: A fascinating accountant: Memoire of Allie Applebot Periodicals (journals, newspapers, and magazine articles): For article titles, capitalize only the first word and proper nouns. Example: Jack Russell terrier and German shepherd survived dive off the London Bridge For publication titles, capitalize the first letter of every major word. Example: Old London Times

What if I have to cite something else? Try these steps, in order. Check the Center for Writing Excellence or the APA manual. Do an Internet search, such as “APA citation for video game.” Find a similar citation and substitute the information you have. Check with your facilitator about the citation in question.

Tips As you write your paper, track your resources by pasting the title, author, and chapter, page, paragraph number or URL after each in-text reference. Repaste this information on a blank page at the end of your paper. This will become your reference page. When you are finished writing the content of your paper, use the Reference and Citation Generator to create the properly formatted citations and reference page entries. Paste these into your paper and make necessary edits. Be sure to alphabetize the reference page before submitting your paper.
