SKIN’S IMPORTANT FUNCTION 1. Forms a barrier against disease-causing microbes.

SKIN’S IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS 2. Helps keep water in the body.

SKIN’S IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS 3. Eliminates waste-sweating

SKIN’S IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS 4. Maintains Temperature Blood vessels enlarge when you become too warm to help cool you off. Sweat gland also produce perspiration to help cool you off.

SKIN’S IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS 5. Gathers information Nerve tissue in the dermis help detect pain, pressure and temperature

SKIN’S IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS 6. Produces Vitamin D Skin produces vitamin D in the presence of sunlight. Only a few minutes of sunlight is needed to produce all the vitamin D you need in a day. Vitamin D helps your body absorb Calcium for your food for your bones.

LAYERS OF THE SKIN EPIDERMIS The outer most layer of skin. NO blood vessels or nerve cells. New skin cells are produced here. Old cells die at about two weeks. Dead cells protect, cushion and carry away bacteria when shed. Tattoos are created in the dermis

LAYERS OF THE SKIN DERMIS The inner layer of skin. Dermis contains: Nerves Blood vessels Sweat glands Hairs Oil glands

Openings in the skin to release perspiration and oils PORES Openings in the skin to release perspiration and oils

FOLLICLES Found in the dermis Hair grows from the follicle Hair above the surface is made of dead cells Structures in which strands of hair grow within the dermis
