2 SKELETAL SYSTEM

3 Function of the Skeletal System
Skeleton or Skeletal System- a network of 206 bones

4 Function of the Skeletal System
Purpose Shape and Support Enables you to move Produces blood cells Provides attachment surfaces for muscle Protects internal organs

5 Joints Joints- area where two or more bones meet
Examples: knees, hips, elbows, and skull

6 Tendons Tendons are bone to muscle and ligaments are bone to bone.

7 Skeletal System

8 Skeletal System

9 THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM

10 The Muscular System Muscle Action
Involuntary muscles move without us thinking about it (swallow, breath, blink, heartbeat) Voluntary muscles we are in full control of (arms, legs, skeletal system)

11 The Muscular System Types of Muscle
Skeletal-voluntary, moves the skeletal system Smooth-involuntary, found in digestive system and in blood vessels Cardiac- involuntary, found only in heart

12 The Muscular System Muscles at Work
Because muscles only contract, there must be a muscle on both sides of a joint to make them work. These muscles are called antagonistic muscles. One will flex and one will extend a joint. The bicep is an antagonistic muscle to the tricep.

13 Muscular System

14 Integumentary System (SKIN)

15 Integumentary System The Body’s Tough Covering
The skin covers the body and prevents the loss of water. It protects the body from injury and infection. The skin also helps to regulate body temperature, eliminate waste, gather information about the environment, and produce vitamin D.

16 Integumentary System Epidermis Outermost layer of skin
Thinner than dermis No nerves or blood vessels Dead cells on outer surface and newer cells underneath Contains melanin that protects skin from burning

17 Integumentary System The Dermis
Contain nerves, sweat glands, hairs, pores, oil glands, and blood vessels

18 Integumentary System Caring for your skin: Eat properly Drink water
Limit sun exposure to protect from cancer Keep skin clean to avoid acne
