French Revolution A Brief Review

Liberty Leading the People

Old Regime Used feudalism to control the state.

First Estate Clergy

Third Estate Peasants & Bourgeoisie

Estates General Louis XVI called them in an attempt to tax the nobles. An effort to raise money.

National Assembly Makes the Tennis Court Oath Organized by the Third Estate. Swore not to leave until they had made a constitution.

Storming the Bastille July 14th = Independence Day Citizens feared an attack from the government.

Great Fear Peasants heard rumors that the nobles were going to destroy their harvests. Attacked nobles’ houses and destroyed documents stating they owed nobles.

Declaration of the Rights of Man Life, Property and Security

Legislative Assembly Responsible for creating laws.

Inflation Due to high inflation, lower classes could not even afford bread.
