Times and Tasks in an LD Round or What Do I Do Now? Murvin Auzenne 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

What is Debate? An organized “argument” Why are all arguments not really debates as the term is used in our activity? 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

We argue about different things Which is the best band/rap artist/act today? Lady Gaga is the best music act today. A question of individual taste Is it raining today? It is raining right now outside this building. It’s a fact , Jack! 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

What Makes LD Different? Should the United States treat violent juveniles as it treats adult offenders? LD resolution : In the United States, juveniles charged with violent felonies ought to be treated as adults in the criminal justice system. Policy resolution: In the United States, it should be the policy of the criminal justice system to proseccute juveniles charged with violent felonies through the criminal justice system. 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

LD is about values/oughts In the United States, juveniles charged with violent felonies ought to be treated as adults in the criminal justice system. Can’t be answered by the “facts” It must be answered in a two step process: What value or goal do we seek / is important for us to achieve? How do we best achieve it? 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

Times and Names AC = 6 MIN NX = 3 MIN NC = 7 MIN AX = 3 MIN 1AR = 4 MIN NR = 6 MIN 2AR = 3 MIN 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

Before the Round Get there early Choose a good seat Be professional Dress professional 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

AC Deliver AC, after asking “Jugde(s) ready? Is my opponent ready?” End by saying “I now stand ready for Cross-Examination” 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

NX Open with a strong question you have pre-written Go down the flow OR hit weakness in their case Yes and No questions, avoid open-ended ones? Stand next to your opponent, look at judge Make notes of concessions and contradictions. Ask why as a follow-up when you sense a weakness in your opponents reply. 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

NC Deliver your NC First 3 minutes or so, give your case Last 4 minutes or so attack their case, going down the flow or hitting weakness ALWAYS attack the VC and do so comparatively, unless you have the same one or a very similar one End by saying “I now stand ready for cross examination.” 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

AX Open with a strong question you have pre-written Go down the flow OR hit weakness in their case or their attack on your case. Yes and No questions, avoid open-ended ones? Stand next to your opponent, look at judge Make notes of concessions and contradictions. Ask why as a follow-up when you sense a weakness in your opponents reply 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

1AR Open by explaining why you are winning – I am winning this debate at this point because… State, warrant and impact your strongest standing argument – the one they dropped, whatever Now go down the flow hitting the most important clashes and explaining how you win them or you outweigh or they don’t matter End by summarizing and asking for the ballot. “I urge an affirmative ballot” 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

NR Open by explaining why you are winning – I am winning this debate at this point because… State, warrant and impact your strongest standing argument – the one they dropped, whatever Now go down the flow hitting the most important clashes and explaining how you win them or you outweigh or they don’t matter End by summarizing and asking for the ballot. “I urge an negative ballot” 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp

2AR You probably CAN’T go down the flow – you have 3 minutes to win the debate After sign-posting , tell the judge either: I am winning this round because…. As before then… Even so, I will go down the flow and offer highlight voting issues as I go Or I will now explain the voting issues in this round and why I win them End by asking for the ballot Shake your opponets hand or at least say ”good round” 4/11/2019 No Limits Debate Camp
