1 CX- 3 minutes Example of CX in Pufo

2 CX It is mental warfare-

3 Only direct argumentative clash with opponent during debate.
Time given after each constructive to question the arguments and analysis just given Huh?

4 Goals- Both Teams 1. Clarify Arguments- Problems w/ the flow, lack of understanding Flow- notes of the round Can ask to see cards/DA/T You should have extra copies of DA/T

5 2. Establish Credibility- for YOUR arguments
Ask why your evidence/claim is inferior Ask about lack of attack Get THEM to admit your argument is reasonable/good Post date evidence

6 3. Undermine the Credibility of THEIR arguments
Point out weak arguments Lack of understanding of their OWN arguments Poor evidence (or other problems) Contradictions (etc) ALWAYS look for lack of warrants

7 Use closed ended questions (yes/no) Test the speaker
Set Traps Use closed ended questions (yes/no) Test the speaker (ask “why” and ask for “explanations”)

8 Questioners Rules in C-X
ALWAYS take your flow with you! Helps you remember questions Maintain control BE POLITE Ask only questions- NO STATEMENTS!! Know the answer you are looking for when asking- if possible ALWAYS face the judge NEVER look at your opponent Know when to quit- don’t berate your opponent Listen to the answers USE THE FULL 3 minutes

9 Witness Rules in C-X Try to maintain some control
(avoid being pushed around) Be prepared- KNOW your arguments You must be able to explain your case and the claims you are making. Practice! Answer questions directly and SLOWLY Use the CX to be persuasive if possible Communicate w/judge (look at them)

10 Helpful Tips ALWAYS sound CONFIDENT, IN CONTROL, and RIGHT
LISTEN TO THEM!! Always be paying attention- even if you are preparing Avoid eye rolling or scoffing HAVE FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS! Stand a little in front and close to the person you are CXing Can give your partner info (post-it, head shake) - but limit it to when it is necessary Makes judge question- “Do you know what you are doing?” No tag teaming in CX (you can’t ask/answer for partner)

11 Helpful Tips Smile at the opponent.
Gentlemen- avoid appearing condescending or overly aggressive Ladies- Avoid appearing “catty”. Being the nice debater has won more rounds than being mean or aggressive. Judges will look for reasons to vote you down for being disrespectful or rude. Do it quite often

12 Some first questions to ask-
Can you explain your disadvantages, Can you explain in your own words what your plan does? Why will your plan work? Look for warrants and attack them. Make them back up their claims. Like- where does it say WHY the loss of privacy is bad. What is the terminal impact? Why do we not see these impacts in our lives? For the last 15 years we have lived in a surveillance state with the government monitoring most of our digital lives. Where is the brink to loss of privacy? Where is that stated directly in your card? How do you account for lone wolf terror attacks? How does stopping racial profiling stop the societal discrimination? Have them explain why their standards on the T are better, AND how you violate.
