Forests of the eastern US (FES 343, 3 credits, Spring Break 2019) Visit the southeast US and learn about major ecosystems and species. Visit the loblolly pine plantation estate and the vibrant forest products industry it supports. Led By: Dr. Laurence Schimleck (Laurence.Schimleck@oregonstate.edu) Discover the diversity of eastern US ecosystems Learn about the importance of fire in SE US forests Visit the loblolly pine plantation estate Visit forest product manufacturing facilities Develop relationships with students and faculty at the University of Georgia Interested? Itinerary - Depart March 23, Return March 29 March 23-25 – UGA Campus (Athens, GA) Overview of forestry in GA Plant ID lectures and labs (major species and forest types) Current topics/issues in southern forestry and natural resources March 26-27 – Jones Ecological Center (see http://jonesctr.org/) Longleaf pine restoration Fuel reduction burn Bald cypress forests March 28-29 – SW Georgia Weyerhaeuser loblolly pine plantations Harvesting operations (including salvage logging after Hurricane Michael) Interfor pine sawmill and WestRock pulp mill Fort Benning / Nature Conservancy About Dr. Schimleck Was professor of wood quality at UGA for 10½ years At UGA taught courses on wood science and technology, wood identification, and dendrology Jointly taught wood products manufacturing and forest harvesting component of UGA’s forestry field camp
