Learn plants which are part of the material culture of indigenous and local people of the region Dr. Robin Kimmerer Distinguished Teaching Professor and Director, Center for Native Peoples and the Environment

2 Classroom, field and lab
Satisfies elective field study requirement in Environmental and Forest Biology. Two hours of lecture, and eight hours of field work and discussion each day for two weeks. Summer; Cranberry Lake Biological Station.

3 Topics include: Identification of plants
Ethnobotanical research techniques Cross-cultural perspectives on plant use Traditional resource management techniques Relationship between disturbance regimes and subsistence plants Non-timber forest products A field-based introduction to the identification and traditional cultural uses of plants in the Adirondack region for food, medicine and fiber. Topics include plant identification, traditional ecological knowledge and use of ecological and ethnobotanical methods.
