Plot – the series of events in a story/novel In the giver

Exposition – the author introduces the reader to the characters and gives necessary background information Create a list of information that the reader needs in order to understand the rest of the novel, The Giver We learn about the plane flying over the community and hear the word “release” The rules The ceremonies (assigned jobs, spouses, children, replacement children)

Rising action – the series of conflicts that lead to the climax (turning point) List the conflicts that occur before the climax; NOTE: the conflicts cannot be memories from the past (ex. The plane, the ceremony of loss, Asher’s language mix-up with snack and smack – these are parts of the exposition) Jonas is skipped at the ceremony Finds out he’s selected as Receiver (involves pain, secluded job) Reads his rules (lie, no release, can’t share about the training, no pain relief) Transmitting memories (sunburn, broke his leg, poachers, warfare, hunger, love) Finds out that there is no love in the community Finds out the truth of release Jonas is angry with his father and the community They make a plan to escape Finds out that Gabe will be released in the morning Must leave early (without training) Takes Gabe Hides from the search planes Jonas and Gabe are hungry and cold – battle the forces of nature

Climax – The turning part in the story; no more conflict will occur after this moment Write what you think is the climax in The Giver. Jonas finds the sled and starts down the hill Sledding down the hill Sees the lights/hears the music

Falling action – what occurs after the climax The Falling Action is a small part of a novel/story. Can you find any event that occurs after the climax?

Resolution – the result Resolution isn’t often explained because it’s up to the reader to interpret what the result is…. The resolution of The Giver is up to the interpretation of the reader. Always be able to justify your reason for believing what you think you happened. Review your answer on your general reflection response. Share. Jonas and Gabe enter a new community (Elsewhere) and start a new life

Paragraph on the plot Introduce your paragraph on plot… What would be your introductory sentence. Examples: Like all books, the author starts off with the exposition, which in this case, was rather lengthy. The plot of The Giver had a large exposition and rising action, but there was an abrupt climax, no falling action, and an unclear resolution. The plot in The Giver consists mostly of the exposition and rising action. The climax and resolution is rather vague leaving the reader feeling …. The plot is the basic layout of the story, broken up into five different areas. Plot in the story consists of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. In Lois Lowry’s The Giver the book is mostly on the exposition and rising action. The climax and resolution is a small part of most stories, but for the Giver, this is especially true.
