Sport managers are more involved in activities and jobs surrounding the event than in the sport or activity itself. Career opportunities are many, varied, and expanding. (continued)

What Is Sport Management? (continued) “[T]he study and practice of all people, activities, businesses, . . . [and] organizations involved in producing, facilitating, promoting, or organizing any sport-related business or product” (Pitts & Stotlar, 2007). Sport management sphere can intersect with careers in other physical activity spheres.

Sport Management, Recreation, Leisure Studies, and Tourism Students interested in a career as sport manager can find themselves competing for jobs with students in related areas: recreation, leisure, sport tourism, and business. Hard to define differences; program structures are diverse. Recreation programs commonly offer greater depth in terms of recreational programming and related considerations. Sport tourism programs address how to develop and manage sport-related travel opportunities and determine their effects. Sport management programs, in contrast, tend to focus on the sport-specific application of business principles such as management and marketing in for-profit and nonprofit settings.
