Assignment Outline This document will form the ANALYSIS part of your assessment. It is worth 60 marks out of 120 - 50% of the overall mark for this assessment. In this assignment you are being tested on your ability to: Analyse media texts and deconstruct them for meaning. Consider the target audiences of different media texts. Consider how media texts use codes and conventions to communicate with an audience. Consider how the media represents the news differently.

Using This Document Use the ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE to guide you through everything that you need to include in order to get maximum marks. Fill your name in on the front page. Work your way through the presentation one slide at a time. Make sure that you have included annotated screen shots on every slide. Take a screen shot using cmd-shift-4. Make sure that you are using appropriate media language. Once you have finished the presentation delete the instruction slides.

Assignment Outline Slides 1 & 2 - Layout What layout features have been included on the front page of The Sun? How has the front page used colour, language and layout to attract an audience? What layout features have been included on the front page of The Times?

Assignment Outline Slides 3 & 4 - Target Audience What would you say is the Target Audience of The Sun? Use Demographics as a starting point i.e. Age, Gender, Social Economic Scale. What evidence can you find on the front pages to support that? Are there stories that might interest this audience? Is the paper easy to read? Perhaps try getting a reading age from this website. Is there anything else being used to attract that audience? How does the Target Audience of The Times differ? Use Demographics as a starting point i.e. Age, Gendre, Social Economic Scale. What evidence is there to support this? Are there any stories that might appeal to a different audience to The Sun? Is the paper easier or harder to read? Is there anything else being used to attract that audience?

Assignment Outline Slides 5 & 6 - News Values What News Values are being demonstrated by the front page of The Sun? Why have they selected the stories that they have? How might this link to the target audience that you have already outlined? What News Values are being demonstrated by the front page of The Times?

Assignment Outline Slide 7 - Ownership Who owns The Sun? How do we know this? What evidence is there? How might this have affected the newspapers? Could it explain any similarities? Could it be used to explain any differences? Do they have any bias - i.e. favour a particular point of view?

Assignment Outline Slide 8 - Challenges How is The Sun trying to face some of the challenges facing the newspaper industry? The internet? Falling advertising? Falling circulation? The challenges of TV news? What evidence in there? How is The Times trying to face some of the challenges facing the newspaper industry?

Assignment Outline Slide 9 - Conclusion How do the front pages of The Sun and The Times reflect the newspapers differences and similarities. You might like to do this as a table and use the titles of the areas that you have looked at as the headings i.e. Similarities Differences Layout Audience News Values Ownership Challenges
