Fractions and Percents Objective: We will learn to compare quantities by using percents. Learn to write fractions as percents and percents as fractions.

A percent means “out of 100”. It describes a part of a 100 A percent means “out of 100”. It describes a part of a 100. 60% means 60 per hundred (or out of 100). So 100% represents a whole. To change a fraction into a percent: Percent means “out of 100”, so you need to write a fraction with a denominator of 100. So if you have a fraction, you must think: what number do I need to multiply by to get 100. For example: 7 × 4 = 28 25 × 4 = 100 = 28% * If a fraction is already over 100, the numerator is the percent, for example: 75 = 75% 100

Examples: Write each fraction as a percent. 3 20 2 25 36 50

To write the percent as a fraction… Since percent means “out of 100” to convert a percent to a fraction you have to write the percent over a hundred. Then you must write the fraction in simplest form. For example: Write the following percent as a fraction. 40% = 40 = 4 = 2 100 10 5

Examples: Write each percent as a fraction in simplest form. 6% 24% 68%

Homework: Write the fraction as a percent. 1. 7 10 2. 16 20 3. 15 25 4. 13 50 5. 1 5 Write each percent as a fraction in simplest form. 6. 45% 7. 30% 8. 62% 9. 88% 10. 2%
