 Fraction: a number in the form a / b, (where b ≠ 0) that represents part of a whole.  Numerator: the top number of a fraction that tells how many parts of a whole are being considered.  Denominator: the bottom number of a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in the whole.  Mixed Number: a number made up of a whole number that is not zero and a fraction

 15 x 3 2 / 5  Step 1: Write all numbers as fractions  Whole Numbers – 15 = 15 / 1  Mixed Numbers – 3 2 / 5 = 17 / 5  Step 2: Simplify numerators and denominators that have the same factors. 15 3 / 1 x 17 / 5 1  Step 3: Multiply numerators and denominators 3 x 17 = 51 1 x 1 1  Answer must be in simplest form 51

 -12 x 3 / 4  -12 / 1 x 3 / 4 Write all numbers as fractions  -12 3 / 1 x 3 / 4 1 Simplify using common factors  -3 x 3 = -9 Multiply Numerators 1 x 1 1 Multiply Denominators  -9 Write answer in simplest form

 1 / 3 x 3 / 8  1 / 3 1 x 3 1 / 8 Simplify using common factors  1 x 1 = 1 Multiply Numerators 1 x 8 8 Multiply Denominators  1 / 8 Write answer in simplest form

 -2 / 3 x 4 / 5 Already written as fractions in simplest form  -2 x 4 = -8 Multiply Numerators 3 x 5 15 Multiply Denominators -8 Write answer in simplest form 15

 2 / 5 x 1 2 / 3  2 / 5 x 5 / 3 Write all numbers as fractions  2 / 5 1 x 5 1 / 3 Simplify using common factors  2 x 1 = 2 Multiply numerators 1 x 3 3 Multiply denominators 2 Write answer in simplest form 3

 4 1 / 5 x 2 1 / 7  21 / 5 x 15 / 7 Write all numbers as fractions  21 3 / 5 1 x 15 3 / 71 Simplify using common factors  3 x 3 = 9 Multiply Numerators 1 x 1 1 Multiply Denominators 9 Write answer in simplest form

 In 2001, the car toll on the George Washington Bridge was $6.00. In 1995, the toll was 2 / 3 of the toll in 2001. What was the toll in 1995? ANSWER
