Advertising Techniques and Media How do they affect you and your body image?

Agree/Disagree Activity Place an “X” on the line continuum to indicate your answer. I would want to have a product that was advertised by one of my favorite celebrities or cartoon characters. Strongly Disagree --------------------------------------------------------------------------Strongly Agree I would want to have a food or snack that was advertised with a great sounding slogan, song, or music. I would want to wear clothing that I saw “cool” kids wearing in a movie or TV show.

What Appeals to You??? View this Discovery Ed Clip to learn more about advertising techniques: http://bcps.discoveryeducation.com/playe r/view?assetGuid=ED4FAC0D-1668-4D79- AD2A- A408F2D90586&showBreadcrumbs=true

Media – How Does It Affect You? Share your thoughts…….

Agree/Disagree Activity Just like before, place an “X” on the line continuum to indicate your answer. No models/actors are as perfect as they appear in ads, movies, or other media. Strongly Disagree ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Strongly Agree Media and advertising have created their own definition of attractiveness or beauty.

Skippy Peanut Butter “Not So Fun” Peanuts: https://www. youtube

Let’s Discuss…. Were there attractive and unattractive actors in the commercial? If so, who? Can you identify other examples in media and advertising where attractive people are used to sell health products?

Now that you have had some discussion about effects of media, give your opinion for this continuum. I think lots of people my age or older tend to compare themselves to people on TV. Strongly Disagree -----------------------------------------------------------Strongly Agree

Remember - body image is how you see your body when you look in the mirror. Your self-esteem is how much you like yourself. If you are comfortable with the way you look, plus like yourself as a person, you will have both a good body image and high self-esteem. Your body is going to be changing physically and emotionally as you grow over the next few years. Sometimes these changes will make you feel uncomfortable. It’s natural for people to compare themselves with others, Comparing yourself with others is natural. But everyone is different and you have a choice in seeing yourself in a positive way. Make certain to accept yourself for who you are!

Show what you have learned! Explain how comparing oneself to others may affect one’s body image and self- esteem in healthy or unhealthy ways.
