Compulsory core: Lesson 9/12 GCSE Sociology What are the processes of socialisation and how do the media act as an agency of socialisation ? Compulsory core: Lesson 9/12 What am I going to learn? To understand how socialisation takes place in daily life Objectives of the lesson are: To recognise process of socialisation and give an example of the terms manipulation, canalisation and modelling To recognise the role of the media in the representation of gender roles

Key words for lesson Manipulation Canalisation Modelling Role model Mass media Masculinity Femininity

Starter: Should all violence, including cartoon violence be banned from any programme that could be seen by children?

Processes of Socialisation Our families and other agencies of socialisation help us to develop our personalities and a sense of who we are. This includes ethnic, gender and social identities (next lesson!) Families do this through the following processes…

Manipulation Children are controlled into certain behaviour Parents encourage behaviour that they approve of and discourage behaviour through praise and punishment These are known as _______ and ________ sanctions?

Canalisation Children are directed by parents into certain interests. This can include taking them to certain sporting activities, music lessons, reading to them. Can you identify what activities your parents encouraged you to do? Are they different to your brother/sister? Jot a few down in your books

Language Social activities Adults speak to girls and boys in different ways. Phrases such as ‘Boys don’t cry’ and ‘little princess’ This can led to teaching young children their gender roles. What term can you remember the teacher using for the boys and girl in the ‘should schools be gender neutral’ clip Social activities Girls often encouraged to feminine activities such as dance, which teaches grace and beauty. Whilst boys may be encouraged to play team games such as football, which emphasises competition.

Modelling Adults show children how to behave by what they do. Children will imitate (copy) their parents and act as they do. Adults become role models for children who copy them. Albert Bandura – psychologist who suggested that children copy what they see and learned violence from the media

Role Model People that children admire and copy

Ann Oakley Well known Sociologist famous for being a feminist. What is feminism? The belief that men and women should be more equal She studied how children learn gender roles She suggests that feminine behaviour is a result of primary socialisation

Masculinity and Femininity What does this mean? All agencies of socialisation, including education, family, media - transmit ideas of masculinity and femininity Masculine – seen as normal for males Feminine – seen as normal for females The media play a particularly important role in this process.

What do I mean by the term: The Media Forms of communication that reach a lot of people at a time. TV Film Internet Magazines/books/newspapers Radio

Processes of Socialisation The Media agency The media is an _______ of socialisation. TV programmes and films are often targeted at males or females. Question: Can you identify a programme aimed at a man and one aimed at a women?

Gender in TV/films Women - Soaps such as Emmerdale and Coronation Street, Downton Abbey Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead

Media: Informal secondary socialisation Female magazines are often concerned with beauty Video games for boys often involve violence Children who see these images pick up messages about how they should behave and act.

Exam Question Explain why the media are an important part of the socialisation of children (10) Consider 2-3 reasons why children are particularly likely to experience socialisation by the media

Ideas The media are an important agencies of informal secondary socialisation. They set norms and values. The media is big business! The people who create media know what will appeal to us They sell media - music and games as well as advertising products for us to buy. The media may present negative images to represent certain groups, e.g. ethnicity, gender, age, social class The media often uses stereotypes when telling stories because it makes stories easy to follow. Heroes are usually good looking, baddies ugly! Children learn to apply these stereotypes in real life and act as though they are real.

Matching task: Answers Forms of socialisation Explanation with examples Canalisation Children are directed into certain interests Manipulation Children are controlled into certain behaviours Mass media Forms of communication that reach a lot of people at a time Modelling Adults show children how to behave by what they do Role Model People that children admire and copy Femininity Seen as normal for women Masculinity Seen as normal for men 3 minutes

Check your understanding…(A-F) Socialisation is the _____ of learning the norms and values of your culture Children will ____ their parents Bandura suggested that young children learn violence from the ____ Children are ____ into certain activities that will teach them adult roles Ann Oakley was a famous ______ Adults are ____ for children who will copy the adults they admire

Plenary Look at your work and think what you could do to improve it. Look at your neighbour’s work, make one suggestion for improvement. Write down your personal target for improvement to your work.

Next lesson…Identity Key words: Identity Status Stereotypes Labelling Theory Roles Ethnic Gender

Reflection Produce five key points which summarise today’s learning

Red Amber Green How Your Work Will Be Assessed R Reflection T Target Codes for Assessment What this means Red I did not really understand the lesson today. I don’t really think that I met the objectives of the lesson or completed the question for learning. Amber I understood some of the lesson today but there were parts of the learning that I did not really understand and I need help on. Green I understood the question for learning to day and feel confident about what I have been taught. I believe that I learnt everything I needed to in the lesson R Reflection You should write at least two sentences explaining what you did and didn’t understand about today’s lesson or learning intention. T Target You should set yourself targets based on what you are trying to learn. These should only be about your learning.
