GCSE Sociology What is cultural diversity? Compulsory core: Lesson 4/12 What am I going to learn? That cultures and societies are all very different from each other. Objectives of the lesson are: - To identify and give an example of informal and formal sanctions (recap) - To recognise that all cultures have rules of expected behaviour - To define the term anthropology and give an example - To identify and give one example of where gender roles are different from the UK

9 Key word: Cultural diversity – lesson 1
Anthropology – Margaret Mead

10 What is cultural diversity?

11 Cultural Diversity – the range of different ideas and cultures that exist.

12 Question about Gender differences
Some people tend to think that the differences between men and women are natural and to do with biology… Hands up who agrees? Who disagrees?

13 Cultural diversity Some people think that the way that humans behave is natural to them because that is how they were born to act. Sociologists say that it is more likely that people behave as they do because they belong to a culture and were taught expected rules

14 Cultural diversity The existence of cultural diversity and the fact that human cultures tend to be very different, supports the idea that we learn how to act.

15 Handout: Margaret Mead
Key word – Anthropology The study of different human cultures. Margaret Mead looked in particular at gender roles within with in tribal cultures. Margaret Mead lived among a variety of different people. She described their way of life.

16 Gender in different cultures
Found that in the islands of New Guinea, certain tribes, had very different ideas of what is natural to men and women. She discovered that among the Tchambuli, traditional European male/female roles are reversed and men spend time making themselves look attractive for women.

17 Gender Roles According to the anthropologist, Margaret Mead, women among the Tchambuli tribe have shaved heads and they wear few clothes or ornaments. The women control society. Tchambuli men spend a lot of time looking after their appearance and curl their hair. They wear shells, fur and feathers. They compete with each other to get attention from their women for their good looks and their ability to play musical instruments. The men spend time dancing, painting and carving.
