Formal Commands Los mandatos formales (Ud. y Uds.) Formal commands Arreglen sus dormitorios. Straighten up your rooms. No ponga la maleta en la cama, póngala en el suelo. Don’t put the suitcase on the bed. Put it on the floor. Saquen la basura ahora. No la saquen más tarde. Take out the trash now. Don’t take it out later.

In order to make a formal command, you use the yo present tense form and you switch the ending. Verbs that end in –ar use –er/-ir endings and verbs that end –er/-ir use –ar endings. Infinitive Present tense yo form Ud. command Uds. command cortar corto corte corten comer como coma coman sacudir sacudo sacuda sacudan cerrar cierro cierre cierren hacer hago haga hagan salir salgo salga salgan Note that Ud. and Uds. command forms are formed in much the same way as negative tú commands.

These verbs have irregular formal command forms. Infinitive Ud. command Uds. command dar dé den estar esté estén ir vaya vayan saber sepa sepan ser sea sean

In affirmative commands, all object and reflexive pronouns are attached to the end of the verb. An accent mark is added to maintain the original stress in the verb. Levántense, por favor. Get up, please. Dígame la verdad. Tell me the truth.

In negative commands, object and reflexive pronouns precede the verb. No se levanten. Don’t get up. No me diga la verdad. Don’t tell me the truth.
