Current application and future directions EU-OECD definition applied to 29 OECD countries, 1 179 FUA covering two-thirds of OECD population. Increase country coverage (what when no commuting data?) Metropolitan database for FUA larger than 500k people. Increase indicators on FUA (also smaller ones). FUA according to 2000 boundaries and population. Capture urban areas extension changes over the time.
Utility of the methodology to different audiences 1) Inform society 2) Contribute to research 3) Identify policy implications OECD Ministerial meeting Academic papers EU Urban Agenda Metropolitan explorer Methodological notes OECD National Urban Policy Reviews Metropolitan database Videos, brochures Regions at a Glance 2013 Bridge governance and economic performance Well-being in cities

Collaboration with data producers Extension of the database … new indicators improve the current ones (i.e. Employment,..) …requires collaboration with data producers NSO Academia and other institutions
Metropolitan analysis was part of the Regions at a Glance 2013 The series OECD Regions at a Glance compares major regional patterns and trends across OECD countries. Regions at a Glance 2013 (released 4th December 2013) Special focus: Metropolitan areas in OECD countries Regions as drivers of the national competitiveness Sub national finance and investment for regional development Inclusion and equal access to quality services in regions Environmental sustainability in regions Impact of the economic crisis on regional economies in each chapter
Urbanisation Urbanisation interacts strongly with periphery areas Population growth 2000-2012 by city types and city/commuting zone (average yearly growth rates)
Economic competitiveness ..and they account for large share of the national GDP growth (2000-2010) Metropolitan areas account for around half of the OECD population, employment and GDP,… Source: OECD metropolitan database; metropolitan areas are functional urban areas with at least 500,000 population Note: GDP and Employment in the metropolitan areas are estimated by adjusting the GDP values of TL2 regions % of GDP, employment and population in metropolitan areas (2012)
Environmental sustainability Different urban patterns give place to different sources of CO2 emission Source: OECD metropolitan database; metropolitan areas are functional urban areas with at least 500,000 population Share of CO2 emissions from transport and energy sector in the metropolitan areas with more than 1.5 million people, 2008
Administrative organisation Governance will have to take into account the administration organisation of metropolitan areas Note: OECD metropolitan database; metropolitan areas are functional urban areas with at least 500,000 population Top 20 Metro areas with the highest territorial fragmentation (number of local municipalities per 1,000 inhabitants)
