3 OECD Regional typology
Current typology Predominantly Urban (PU), Intermediate (IN), Predominantly Rural (PR) at TL3 level 1) based on population density at municipal level where communities are defined rural if density is < 150 inhab./km2 (< 500 in Japan) 2) proportion of rural population in the region ( >50%  Predominantly rural (PR), <15%  Predominantly urban (PU), other Intermediate (IN) 3) Reallocation of the typology if Urban Centres (> 200K Rural  Intermediate, > 500K Intermediate  Urban) 4) Predominantly Rural (PR) are further classified Predominantly Rural Close to a city (PRC) Predominantly Rural Remote (PRR) Driving time of at least 50% of regional population to the closest locality with more than inhabitants. (<> 60 minutes)

4 OECD Revised Regional typology (work in process)
Predominantly Urban (PU), Intermediate (IN), Predominantly Rural (PR) at TL3 level based on population density grid at 1km2, using the last 2011 census data and LandScan world population database. urban clusters are contiguous cells (including diagonals) with for EU countries a density threshold (300 hab./km2 for EU) and minimum of population (5000 for EU) 3) share of rural population >=50% rural ; < 20%: urban ; other intermediate For EU countries, typology will be collected from Eurostat when data based on 2011 census are available Computation some countries where TL3 are not equal to NUST3 (e.g. Germany,TL3 are 96 spatial planning regions) - For non-EU countries, a first version proposed and discussed by the end of the month -> 1st Objective: have a revised typology in the next edition of the publication Region at a Glance (release in June 2016). Draft started. -> 2nd Objective (to be confirmed): have an extended typology for Rural (remote / close to a city)
