Pope Advanced Placement Parent/Student Informational Meeting WELCOME

General Overview of AP Program Advanced Placement Is: A Rigorous Program-college level curriculum National curriculum culminating with a national exam in May Yearlong commitment Designed for self-motivated, self-starting students About the curriculum and NOT the quality point For qualified students, i.e. all prerequisites met Require a significant time commitment, a good deal of outside reading and often study group participation

Five Claims confirmed by multiple research studies Perform well in subsequent college courses in the discipline Perform well overall in their first year of college Are more likely to graduate in four years Are more likely to major in their AP subject or a related discipline Are more likely to have better outcomes in college compared to students who take dual enrollment courses

Testing basics 2019 exams are $94 each (financial aid available for Free/Reduced lunch students) Register on-line Exams are typically 2-3 hours (multiple choice/free response) in May A score of 3 or higher on an AP exam can typically earn students college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college

Define Success. Seek balance; Think, learn and grow! Start by selecting subjects that interest you the most. Be honest with yourself about your academic load. College credit means a college level course! Think about time management and the time commitment each course requires.

Define Success. Seek balance; Think, learn and grow! Potential Drawbacks Student earn more points for AP classes precisely because AP classes are so challenging. If you overload on AP classes, you'll have significantly more homework and spend more time studying. If you can't commit to this workload, a few extra points on a C or D grade will look worse on your transcript than if you had taken standard classes and gotten As or Bs. Awareness of Overloading on AP/IB Courses Admissions offices should convey to students that simply taking large numbers of AP or IB courses per year is often not as valuable as sustained achievement in a limited number of areas. While some students can benefit from and handle large numbers of AP/IB courses, many students benefit from taking smaller numbers of advanced courses. Too often there is the perception that these students are penalized in the admissions process. At the same time, it’s vital to increase access to advanced courses for large numbers of students in schools without access to adequately challenging courses.
