-Contest Schedule- 8:15 – 9:30 – Round 1 9:45 – 11:00 – Round 2 11:30 – 12:30 – Semi-Final (Top 5 in each category) St. Gregory Drama Dept Presentation 12:45-1:15 – Lunch 1:15 – 2:45 – Final Round (Top 3 in each category – perform in front of 5 judges and peers)

Middle School Literature Requirements: ALL Students are required to perform a speech April th Perform speech in literature class for test grade Practice days will be on Thursdays between February 18 th through April 15th

Categories to consider : Duet Acting Monologue Declamation Prose (5-6) / Poetry (7-8) Original Oratory

Duet Acting Must be memorized 2-person team. Additional wording may be added only for the purpose of introduction, transition, and conclusion (not to exceed 1 min). Authors wording may not be altered (except to delete offensive language). Only props – 2 simple chairs Maximum time of 6 minutes includes all expositions.

Monologue Must be memorized. One person Additional original wording for introduction at beginning – prepare audience for presentation No spoken conclusion Only Prop – one chair Maximum time is 4 minutes. All scripts must be from a published source. Absolutely no transcribing from a movie, music, or television program will be allowed.

Declamation Must be memorized. One person Defined as a speech, editorial, or essay written by some person other than the speaker. Short introduction acquaints the audience with the author, and the reason why this particular material was chosen. Maximum time is 6 minutes.

Prose / Poetry Prose –5&6 - any published material of literary merit except poetry or drama Poetry –7&8 - published poetry Read from book or manuscript. Gestures limited - effects through vocal changes & facial expressions. Eye contact with judge The reader may cut or edit his material as he sees fit. Maximum time is 5 minutes.

Original Oratory Must be memorized. Any subject. It must be written by the student, although the teacher may offer suggestions as to organization, content, style, etc. No more than 75 words may be quoted directly or indirectly. Original work from last years tournament may not be repeated by the student. Maximum time is 6 minutes.

Determine your category Be ready with 1 st, 2 nd,& 3 rd choice. Consider pros and cons of each category (dependability of partner, writing ability, memorization skills) Find a piece that you really like or speaks about something you are passionate about. Be open to trying something new. HAVE FUN!!!
