CHAPTER OBJECTIVES Launch an application, create a text document, and save the document on the desktop Create, name, and save a text document directly on the desktop Move documents to the My Documents folder Arrange objects in the My Documents folder in groups

CREATING A DOCUMENT BY LAUNCHING AN APPLICATION PROGRAM Word processing program Spreadsheet program Presentation graphics program Application-centric approach Opening an application program and then creating a document

CREATING A DOCUMENT BY LAUNCHING AN APPLICATION PROGRAM Click the Start button. Point to All Programs on the Start menu. Point to Accessories on the All Programs submenu. Point to Notepad on the Accessories submenu.

Click Notepad

Type the following information in Notepad, pressing the ENTER key to move to the next line: insertion point

SAVING A DOCUMENT ON THE DESKTOP File name Click File on the menu bar and then point to Save As

Click Save As

Type Sanchez Reminders (Monday) in the File name text box Type Sanchez Reminders (Monday) in the File name text box. Point to the Desktop icon on the shortcut bar. Click the Desktop button and then point to the Save button in the Save As dialog box

Click the Save button

PRINTING A DOCUMENT FROM AN APPLICATION PROGRAM Click File on the menu bar and then point to Print

Click Print

Point to the Print button in the Print dialog box, and click it.

CLOSING A DOCUMENT Point to the Close button on the Notepad title bar

Click the Close button

CREATING AND NAMING A DOCUMENT ON THE DESKTOP Document-centric approach Ex: Creating a blank document on the desktop and then using Notepad to enter data into the document Right-click an open area on the desktop, point to New on the shortcut menu, and then point to Text Document on the New submenu

Click Text Document

Naming a Document Type Pearson Reminders (Monday) in the icon title text box and then press the ENTER key

OPENING A DOCUMENT ON THE DESKTOP Point to the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon on the desktop

Double-click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon

Type the following information in Notepad, pressing the ENTER key to move to the next line:

CLOSING AND SAVING A DOCUMENT Click the Close button on the Notepad title bar. Point to the Yes button in the Notepad dialog box

Click the Yes button

Click an open area of the desktop to deselect the Pearson Reminders (Monday) document on the desktop

STORING DOCUMENTS IN THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER A central location for storing and managing documents and folders

MOVING MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS TO THE MY DUCUMENTS FOLDERS Click the Sanchez icon on the desktop. While holding down the SHIFT key, click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon on the desktop, and then release the SHIFT key

Drag the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon onto the Start button on the taskbar. Do not release the left mouse button

Drag the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon onto the My Documents command on the Start menu. Do not release the left mouse button

Release the left mouse button

Click an open area of the desktop to remove the Start menu

OPENING THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu

ARRANGING THE ICONS IN THE MY DOCUMENTS WINDOW Title view Large Icons format Click View on the menu bar, point to Arrange Icons by on the View menu, and then point to Show in Groups on the Arrange Icons by submenu

Click Show in Groups

ARRANGING THE ICONS IN A FOLDER BY FILE TYPE Click View on the menu bar, point to Arrange icons by on the View menu, and then point to Type

Click Type

CREATING A FOLDER IN THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER Point to Make a new folder in the File and Folder Tasks area of the My Documents window

Click Make a new folder. Type Daily Reminders in the icon title text box and then press the ENTER key

MOVING DOCUMENTS INTO A FOLDER Right-drag the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon onto the Daily Reminders folder icon. Point to Move Here on the shortcut menu

Click Move Here

Right-drag the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon onto the Daily Reminders icon. Click Move Here on the shortcut menu. Point to the Close button in the My Documents window

Click the Close button

CREATING FOLDER SHORTCUTS A link to any object on the computer or on a network, such as a program, file, folder, disk drive, Web page, printer, or another computer

ADDING A SHORTCUT ON THE START MENU Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu. Point to the Daily Reminders icon in the My Documents window

Drag the Daily Reminders icon onto the Start button Drag the Daily Reminders icon onto the Start button. Do not release the left mouse button

Release the left mouse button

Click an open area of the desktop to close the Start menu Click an open area of the desktop to close the Start menu. Click the Close button in the My Documents window

OPENING A FOLDER USING A SHORTCUT ON THE START MENU Click the Start button. Point to Daily Reminders in the pinned items list

Click Daily Reminders. Point to the Close button in the Daily Reminders window

Click the Close button in the Daily Reminders window

REMOVING A SHORTCUT FROM THE START MENU Click the Start button. Right-click Daily Reminders on the Start menu and then point to Remove from This List on the shortcut menu

Click Remove from This List

Click an open area of the desktop to close the Start menu

CREATING A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu. Right-drag the Daily Reminders icon from the My Documents window into an open area of the desktop. Point to Create Shortcuts here on the shortcut menu

OPENING A FOLDER USING A SHORTCUT ON THE DESKTOP Double-click the Shortcut to Daily Reminders folder icon on the desktop. Move and resize the Daily Reminders shown in the following figure:

Press the DOWN ARROW key five times to move the insertion point to the end of the document. Type 4. Notify Sales – NetMeeting at 3:00 p.m. and then press the ENTER key

OPENING MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS Multitasking Multiple programs running at the same time Click the Daily Reminders button on the taskbar. Point to the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon in the Daily Reminders window

Double-click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon Double-click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon. Press the DOWN ARROW key five times to move the insertion point to the end of the document in the Notepad window. Type 4. Call Dan – Birthday Party for Carol and then press the ENTER key

OPENING AN INACTIVE WINDOW Click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) – Notepad button on the taskbar. When the window opens, type 5. Dinner with Art Perez – 7:00 p.m., The Crab House and then press the ENTER key

TASKBAR BUTTON GROUPING Displays a single button on the taskbar for multiple documents opened by the same application program

MINIMIZING ALL OPEN WINDOWS Show the Desktop command Right-click an open area of the taskbar and then point to Show the Desktop

Click Show the Desktop

CLOSING MULTIPLE WINDOWS Right-click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) – Notepad button on the taskbar. Point to Close

Click Close. Point to the Yes button in the Notepad dialog box

Click Close. When the Notepad dialog box displays asking if you want to save the changes, click the Yes button

PRINTING A DOCUMENT FROM WITHIN A FOLDER Click the Daily Reminders button on the taskbar. Click the Pearson Reminders (Monday) icon in the Daily Reminders folder to select the icon. While holding down the SHIFT key, click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon, and then release the SHIFT key.

Right-click the Sanchez Reminders (Monday) icon. Point to Print on the shortcut menu.

Click Print

Click the Close button in the Daily Reminders window

COPYING A FOLDER ONTO A FLOPPY DISK Backup Insert a formatted floppy disk into drive A Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu. Right-click the Daily Reminders icon in the My Documents window. Point to Send To on the shortcut menu. Point to 3½ Floppy (A:) on the Send To submenu

Click 3½ Floppy (A:)

Click the Close button in the My Documents window

OPENING A FOLDER ON A FLOPPY DISK Click the Start button and then click My Computer. Point to the 3½ Floppy (A:) icon in the My Computer window

Double-click 3½ Floppy (A:) Double-click 3½ Floppy (A:). Point to the Daily Reminders icon in the 3½ Floppy (A:) window

Double-click the Daily Reminders icon Double-click the Daily Reminders icon. Point to the Close button on the Daily Reminders title bar.

Click the Close button. Remove the floppy disk from drive A.

DELETING SHORTCUTS, FILES, AND FOLDERS Delete a shortcut Delete an icon Recycle Bin

DELETING A SHORTCUT FROM THE DESKTOP Right-drag the Shortcut to Daily Reminders icon onto the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. Point to Move Here on the shortcut menu

Click Move Here

DELETING MULTIPLE FILES Click the Start menu. Click My Documents. Double-click the Daily Reminders icon in the My Documents folder. Place the mouse pointer below and to the right of the two document icons in the Daily Reminders window. Drag through until both icons are selected. Point to Delete the selected items in the Daily Reminders Window

Click Delete the selected items Click Delete the selected items. Point to the Yes button in the Confirm Multiple File Delete dialog box.

Click the Yes button. Point to the Close button in the Daily Reminders window

Click the Close button

DELETING A FOLDER FROM THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER Click the Start button. Click My Documents on the Start menu. Drag the Daily Reminders icon to the Recycle Bin. Do not release the left mouse button

Click the Close button.

CHANGING A PASSWORD Click the Start button. Point to Control Panel on the Start menu

Click Control Panel. Point to User Accounts in the Control Panel window.

Click User Accounts. Point to Change my password in the User Accounts window

Click Change my password Click Change my password. Type lakers in the Type your current password text box, type #1Lakersfan in the Type a new password text box, and type #1Lakersfan in the Type the new password again to confirm text box, and type Brad is a Lakers fan in the Type a word or phrase to use as a password hint text box. Point to the Change Password button.

Click the Change Password button Click the Change Password button. Click the Close button in the User Accounts window. Click the Close button in the Control Panel window.

CHANGING A USER PICTURE Click the Start button. Click Control Panel. Click User Accounts. Point to Change my picture in the User Accounts window

Click Change my picture. Point to the dirt bike picture in the list box.

Click the dirt bike picture. Point to the Change Picture button.

Click the Change Picture button

Click the Close button in the User Accounts window. Click the Close Button in the Control Panel window.

SWITCHING BETWEEN USER ACCOUNTS Fast User Switching Allows you to switch from one user account to another user account quickly without having to log off from the computer before switching and then log on to the computer after switching Click the Start button. Point to the Log Off button on the Start menu

Click the Log Off button Click the Log Off button. Point to the Switch User button in the Log Off Windows dialog box.

Click the Switch User button. Point to Guest on the Welcome screen

Click the Guest icon. Click the Start button to display the Start menu.

Click an open area of the desktop to remove the Start menu.

LOGGING OFF THE GUEST ACCOUNT FROM THE COMPUTER Click the Start button on the taskbar Click Log Off on the Start menu Click the Log Off button in the Log Off Windows dialog box

LOGGING OFF FROM THE COMPUTER Click the Brad Wilson icon on the Welcome screen. If necessary, enter a password Click the Start button on the taskbar Click Log Off on the Start menu Click the Log Off button in the Log Off Windows dialog box

TURNING OFF THE COMPUTER Click the Turn off computer button on the Welcome screen Click the Turn Off button in the Turn off computer dialog box If necessary, click the Yes button in the Windows dialog box
