The IET/MATE Hong Kong Underwater Robot Challenge 2013 Dr Robin Bradbeer 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20131

A national partnership of educational institutions and organizations working to improve marine technical education in the U.S. and to meet the workplace needs of America's marine-related workforce and employers. 08 June 2014ROV Contest The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center

21 regional ROV contests that take place across U.S. and in Canada, Hong Kong, Scotland, Egypt and Japan. Student teams from middle schools, high schools, home schools, community colleges, and universities participate in the events, which consist of different classes that vary depending on the sophistication of the ROVs and the mission requirements. 08 June 2014ROV Contest The MATE ROV Competition

Why? 2/3 the planet covered by water We know more about the surface of the moon than the surface of the earth 60% of the worlds biomass is under the oceans 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20134

Objectives of the contest Increase the awareness and visibility of marine technical fields, educational and career opportunities, and potential employers. Help students develop the skills necessary to enter careers in technical fields. These skills include the ability to problem solve, think critically, troubleshoot, communicate effectively, and manage projects 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20135

Objectives of the contest To enhance the awareness of teachers and students to marine conservation and the oceans effects on our planet and our lives. To provide a platform for design and technology students to partake in a practical design exercise with observable objectives. Increase students understanding of the role that ROVs play in modern ocean engineering and environmental applications. 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20136

The Contest classes Three classes of entry: Explorer for university, college and high school Ranger for middle and high school Scout for elementary/primary school 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20137

The missions – from Ocean Observing Systems: Tools for Tomorrow's Science & Technology Workforce (NASA, Houston) 2007Celebrating the International Polar Year: Science & Technology Under the Ice (St Johns, Newfoundland) 2008Diving to the Deep: Uncovering the Mysteries of Mid-Ocean Ridges (Scripps UCSD, San Diego) 2009ROVs: The Next Generation of Submarine Rescue Vehicles (MMAA, Massachusetts) 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20138

The missions – from ROVs in Treacherous Terrain: Science Erupts on Loihi, Hawaiis Undersea Volcano (Hilo, Hawaii) 2011ROVs: rescuing the oceans; oil spills and other environmental disasters NASA, Houston) 2012Evaluating World War II shipwrecks and the potentially hazardous material that they may still contain. (Miami, Florida) 08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest 20139

2012 contest Mission 300 points (max), plus a time bonus Engineering & communication 200 points (max) Technical reports – 80 points (max) Engineering evaluations – 80 points (max) Poster displays – 40 points (max) 08 June Intro ROV Contest 2013

2012 contest Surveying and removing hazardous waste from a WWII shipwreck Task #1 Survey the shipwreck site Measuring the length of the wreck. Determining the orientation of the ship on the seafloor. Creating a map of the wreck site. Determining if debris piles are metal or non-metal. Scanning the shipwreck 08 June ROV Contest June 2014Intro ROV Contest

08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest Task #2: Removing fuel oil from the shipwreck This mission task involves : Transporting and attaching a lift bag to a fallen mast. Inflating the lift bag to remove the fallen mast from the worksite. Removing endangered encrusting coral from the ships hull. (2 numbers max) Transplanting the coral to the grid (unoccupied square) 2012 contest

08 June 2014Intro ROV Contest Using two simulated sensors, determine if fuel oil remains inside the fuel tank. Can combine into 1 sensor 12cm long & 2cm in dia. (or 2cmx2cm square) Calibrate it first. Then place it on the black PVC section. Removing a sample of fuel oil from within the tank by drilling a hole into the hull. Returning the sample to the surface. Resealing the hole with the magnetic plug contest
