SWBAT compare and contrast the technologies utilized in both World War I and World War II, noting the human and environmental devastation. World War I Location: Worldwide, but mostly in Europe Dates: 1914-1918 Deaths: 20,000,000 Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_by_death_toll World War II Location: Worldwide Dates: 1939-1945 Deaths: 60,000,000 - 85,000,000

Initial Activity One reason for the outbreak of World War II was the (1) ineffectiveness of the League of Nations (2) growing tension between the United States and the Soviet Union (3) conflict between the Hapsburg and the Romanov families (4) refusal of the German government to sign the Treaty of Versailles

What was war like in WWII? How did it affect those involved?

Electronics and Communication: The Enigma Machine Equipment designed for communication and the interception of communication became essential during World War II. The Allied and Axis nations relied on different forms of communication technology to send encrypted messages and break into their enemy’s messages.

Assessment Was the United States correct or were they wrong for dropping the Atomic Bomb?

SWBAT evaluate the efforts to resolve World War II by analyzing the Potsdam and Yalta conferences.

1945 was an important year because it marked the end of World War II and the emergence of new relationships between the remaining world powers: the United States and the USSR. Prior to the official end of World War II, the Allies (United States, USSR, and Britain) hosted two conferences: Yalta in February 1945 and Potsdam in July 1945. These conferences were designed to help decide what would happen to Europe, specifically, Germany, at the end of World War II. In between the conferences, delegates from 50 nations meet in San Francisco for the United Nations (UN) in April of 1945. The United Nations, much like the original intent of the League of Nations, was created to maintain international peace and security. By May 1945, Germany surrendered to the Allies.

Potsdam Conference

Road to the Cold War The relationship between the USA and USSR (Russia after 1991) breaks down because the USA and Great Britain fear that the USSR wants to much reparations ($$$) from Germany and the USA was concerned this could cause Germany to wage war similar to after the Treaty of Versailles.

Assessment – Free Write How would you have suggested brining an end to World War II? Peace organization? Agreements with Germany that favored Germany? (Appeasement) New alliances in Europe? How would you deal with Japan?
