2.4.19 U.S. HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 1783 - Britain declared a formal cessation of hostilities with its former colonies, the United States of America. 1789 - Electors unanimously chose George Washington to be the first president of the United States. 1861 - Delegates from six southern states met in Montgomery, AL, to form the Confederate States of America. 1904 - The Russo-Japanese War began after Japan laid siege to Port Arthur. 1945 - During World War II, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Josef Stalin began a conference at Yalta to outline plans for Germany's defeat. 1964 - The Administrator of General Services announced that the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution had been ratified. Exit Ticket/Objective 5.7 Assessment On December 7th, 1941 Japan launched a surprise attack on our naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Following the attack Americans rallied around the slogan (1)_____. Soon after we began to prepare for war. After the attack 5 million men (2)_____ to serve in the military. Since we still needed more men we used the Selective Service System to (3)_____ an additional 10 million men into the military. The expansion of the military included help from all Americans. For example, 350,000 women served in the (4)_____, which was originally not an official part of the Army. Other groups of minorities joined as well including, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Native-Americans and (5)_____.

Exit Ticket/Objective 5.7 Assessment While men and women were being added to the military factories began producing the weapons needed to win the war. At this time the city of (6)_____ became “the arsenal of democracy” because of its ability to produce the tanks, planes & trucks that would be needed to win the war. The government also needed to sell the war to the American people and turned to (7)____ to produce propaganda in the form of war movies. The U.S. also mobilized its scientists when FDR created the (8)_____ which was responsible for developing sonar, DDT and penicillin. These scientists also would lead the (9)_____ which was given the job to create an atomic bomb.
