Key Stage 4 Options 2019/2021 Mr Amli

is compulsory - ‘the core’ How Does Key Stage 4 work? 60% of the timetable is compulsory - ‘the core’ Maths English Language English Literature Science (Double award) Physical Education (PE) – Non examination.

What choices are there? 40% of the timetable is optional - ‘the choices’

New Progress measures English and Maths count DOUBLE EBacc subjects include Science (Combined or Triple Science) Geography History French Spanish Computer Science

Curriculum Statement Key characteristics of the JFC curriculum: Vehicle to improving social mobility for the town of Melton Mowbray Regardless of starting points, all students access an aspirational curriculum All students study Humanities to GCSE and where recruitment allows, the vast majority will study a language over their 5 years at JFC In addition to core curriculum, students are offered a wide range of option subjects Clear focus on transition between primary and secondary (MET) John Ferneley College is highly committed to offering all students the opportunity to take part in a wide range of enrichment activities, through sport, performance and outdoor and adventurous activities

What do I need to know before I start? Subjects are organised into 2 option blocks Your child will choose one Humanities subject and then have three free choices from block 2. (Also choose two reserve subjects from block 2) We will aim to accommodate first choices but there are no promises!

What will students achieve by the end of Year 11? English Language GCSE English Literature GCSE Maths GCSE Science at GCSE (Combined – 2 GCSE’S) or (Triple Science – 3 GCSE’s but counts as one of the options) Humanities (Option Block 1) Free Choice 1 (Option Block 2) Free Choice 2 (Option Block 2) Free Choice 3 (Option Block 2)

What choices are available? Option Block 1 Option Block 2 History Geography Business Studies/Economics Computer Science Design Technology Triple Science Drama Music Art Dance GCSE PE OCR – Sport Studies Media Studies Health and Social Care French Spanish

What is the English Baccalaureate (EBacc)? Awarded to students that achieve a grade 4 or above in the following: GCSE English Language or English Literature GCSE Maths GCSE Science (Combined) or (Triple) GCSE French or Spanish GCSE History or Geography

EBacc Government are targeting all schools to enter 75% of students for EBACC route by 2022 Most schools have been rapidly increasing entry over last four years Many schools have said 100% entry

What does this mean for our children?   If I had a crystal ball…. Universities/HE responses Increasing numbers of young people with impressive suite of rigorous qualifications Increasing focus on subjects studied over grades achieved…

JFC’s response so far… Children first – only at pace that is right for our community Currently EBACC entry is lagging compared with local schools – and nationally Duty of care to children – in the future, are we equipping young people with qualifications to have a fair chance, against their peers? Significant investment in Humanities and MFL to ensure not only entry but achievement for ALL

How do I help my son/daughter make their choices? Read the booklet with them Encourage a discussion – try to get them to talk you! Look at the way the subject is assessed Make sure they ask themselves some important questions What subjects do I need? What subjects do I enjoy? What subjects am I already good at? What do my teachers think? What does the college recommend? What do I want to do?

Some important Do’s and Don’ts Do Don’t Choose subjects that you enjoy Guess. It is too important Do choose subjects that you are good at Choose a subject just because your friend does Do talk to people about it Choose a subject just because you like the teacher Do ask teachers Select subjects that are too similar

Pathways 2019/2021 - What happens next? Tuesday 15th January 2019 Pathways Launch & Marketplace for parents & students and a chance to talk with subject teachers Friday 25th January 2019 Deadline to return the student pathway form April 2019 Initial confirmation of choices June/July 2019 Final confirmation of choices
