Intercultural Relationships in the classroom

At SLCC… Salt Lake Community College, an equal opportunity institution, welcomes students for admission to any course of study for which their qualifications indicate they can benefit without regard to race, color, sexual orientation, national origin, age, gender, veteran status, disability or religion. http://www.slcc.edu/policies/docs/Student_Code_of_Conduct.pdf

What is an Intercultural Relationship? As instructors of these courses, we not only welcome each of our students, but we start to form relationships with them on a daily basis. An intercultural relationship is the ability to “get along” with our students, especially those from a different cultural background!

What are some cultural differences that students have that may contribute to an intercultural relationship? First language Gender Age Religion Race Disabilities Adult vs young adult Differing learning styles Introverted personality

What are some aspects of positive intercultural relationships? Positive relationships don’t simply form on their own. They require action. We must seek to understand and take action to assist individuals in their growing and learning. Positive relationships must depend on respect and communication.

“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities” ― Stephen R. Covey How can I create an inclusive classroom environment that supports learning for all students? Value different learners and their experiences Create collaborative relationships while fostering communication Promote positive behavior in class Differentiate instruction for diverse learners Differentiate large and small group instruction Encourage student success! “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities”  ― Stephen R. Covey
