Transcendentalism Transcendentalism- go beyond what society thinks to form your own beliefs, rely on nature Society says you should: Write with your right hand, use left Eat with silverware, use hands Wear certain brands of clothing, make your own Famous authors of transcendentalism: Ralph Waldo Emerson- abolitionist Henry David Thoreau- jailed for refusing to pay taxes during Mexican American War, Civil Disobeience Walt Whitman- wrote Leaves of Grass which began poetic free verse movement

Mark Twain Wrote Huck Finn Used language and showed culture of south “I hadn’t had a bite to eat since yesterday, so Jim he got out some corn-dodgers and buttermilk, and pork and cabbage and greens— there ain’t nothing in the world so good when it’s cooked right— and whilst I eat my supper we talked and had a good time. . . .We said there warn’t no home like a raft, after all.
