4 Roots of the Reform Era What early religious movement resulted in the challenging of royal authority during the revolutionary era? What is one example of civil disobedience that we have studied? What do you think the focus of early American art is? Henry David Thoreau's philosophical/religious belief that man was good. Truth could be found in nature. Organized religion and government was corrupting. Thoreau practiced civil disobedience by protesting the Mexican War by refusing to pay his taxes. Some reform movements will use civil disobedience to obtain their goals. A religious movement that aimed to remove the evils from society. It was the root of social reform in the United States. John Audubon- American artist that painted birds/nature. Hudson River School- Art that emphasized the beauty of American nature.
