Important Quote to Remember “The four Gospels occupy a central place because Christ Jesus is their center.” (CCC 139).

An Important Character The best Apologist of the second century was Justin Martyr. Once calling himself a “disciple of Plato”, he converted to Christianity and wrote numerous treatises on Christianity and wrote numerous treaties on christianity as a legitimate religion and lifestyle in the wider pagan world. He was martyred for the Christian faith around AD 165

The Bible The sacred scripture used by christians is the Bible. The gospels are the pre-eminent books of the New Testament, for they proclaim Jesus as the Son of god through the telling of his life, ministry, death and resurrection.

The Bible (cont.) The Bible is the word of God, revealing to humankind God’s divine plan. There were a number of other Christian writings that were written as Gospels, epistles, or were apocalyptic in nature.

The Bible (cont.) God inspired the human authors of the sacred books. To quote the second Vatican Council document Dei Verbum: To compose the sacred books, God chose certain men who, all the while he employed them in this task, made full use of their own faculties and powers.

Criteria of the Bible 1. Apostolic, that is attributed to an apostle or one of his companions. 2. Ancient. 3. Widely read among the faithful. 4. A source of the truth of God’s revelation and not heresy.

The Bible Recognized For the first Christians that were Jews, the hebrew Bible was recognized already as authoritative. The Christian Bible includes the Hebrew scriptures used by Jews more commonly known to Christians as the Old Testament.

How The Bible Is Used All christians accept the same twenty-seven books in the New Testament as authoritative Christians use the Bible in both private and public settings. Individuals may read the Bible as part of their prayer. The Bible is often used as part of family devotions or study groups.

Disagreement While there may be general consensus among the various Christians branches with regard to the content of the Bible, there is wide disagreement in its interpretation. Many more Protestants believe that since God is the author of the Bible, it is the literal Word of God who dictated word for word to the various writers over the centuries. For them the Bible errs neither in spiritual nor secular matters because God does not err.

Reason for the apologetics The second century saw a rise in Christian writings called Apologetics Apologetics refers to a style of writing intended for Christians to help them explain and defend their faith.

The critera for a book to be in the N.T. It must be apostolic that is attributed to an Apostle or one of his companions Ancient Widely read among the faithful; and A source of the truth of God’s revelation and not heresy.
