Three Types of Irony General definition- The difference between appearance and reality, expectation and result, or meaning and intention. 1. Verbal Irony- Words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant. Ex. “Have a nice day, Jerk!” 2. Dramatic Irony- When there is a difference between what a character believes and what the reader or viewer knows to be true. 3. Situational Irony- When there is a difference between what the character and the reader believes to be true (surprise ending).
