Costa’s Levels of Thinking

3 Levels of Question What is the definition of inquiry? Can you give an example of how inquiry is used in the AVID classroom? How might inquiry be used in the workplace? Turn to an elbow partner and discuss how these three questions differ.

What is Inquiry? Inquiry is “a seeking for truth, information, or knowledge—seeking information by questioning.” Being able to recognize different levels of thinking is beneficial for all students in many areas of learning.

Overview of the Levels of Thinking: Level 1 – Audience can point to the correct answer from the source. Level 2 - Audience infer answers from what the source implies, finding answers in several places throughout the source. Level 3 - Audience thinks beyond what the source states. Answers are based on audience’s prior knowledge/experience and will vary.

Increase your GPA! Gathering (Lowest level of thinking) Identify and Recall information Processing (Higher level of thinking) Making connections and creating relationships with information Applying (Highest level of thinking) Evaluating actions, solutions, and connections made in order to predict

Example of Level One Question: Will you name the planets of the Solar System?

Example of Level Two Question: What are the similarities and differences of Jupiter and Saturn?

Example of Level Three Question: Based on what you know about Earth, could you analyze why other planets are uninhabitable?

Reflection: Respond to the following questions: How many levels are there in Costa’s Levels of Thinking? What is the difference between Level 1 thinking and Level 3 thinking? Which level of thinker do you currently relate to most? Which level of thinker do you think you must become to be a successful AVID student?
