2 Formative Assessment... 1. Helps to check progress and provide midcourse correction so student can close the gap of where they are and the learning goal. 2. Promotes self governing skills 3. Key to help students develop critical thinking skills. (Higher levels of Bloom’s) Notes: avoid grading, offer opportunity to close gap, use assessment to enhance instruction.

4 Costa’s Levels of Questioning
Level 1: Gathering Information- Identifying and recalling information. Level 2: Processing Information- Making sense out of information; processing the information gathered by making connections and creating relationships. Level 3: Applying Information-Applying and evaluating actions, solutions and connection made in order to predict.

6 Riddle Cards (Utilizes Costa’s 3rd Level)
Front side: -Riddle (rhyming or non-rhyming) consisting of clues that refer to the meaning of the term -Picture that relates to riddle Back side: - Word / answer to riddle - Description of how riddle relates to definition (2-3 sentences)

7 Vocabulary Concept Map (Utilizes Costa’s Levels 2-3)

8 Activity Group A: Create a vocabulary concept map using a “level 3 word” of your choice. Group B: Create a riddle card using a “level 2 word” of your choice.

9 30 Second Expert Step 1: Find a partner (stay standing)
Step 2: One person shares his or her thoughts for 30 seconds while the other one listens. Begin by saying…”I am an expert at this topic because I know…” Step 3: The listener summarizes what he or she heard by and begin summary with “According to _____” and summarizes what was heard. After summary, ask, “Did I get that right?” Step 4: Reverse Roles Step 5: Record any new knowledge in the right column. (See board for chart setup) - Topic: Formative Assessment
