Using Wikis to Facilitate Teaching & Learning Mico e-Learning Workshop

Learning Outcomes At the end of this workshop you will be able to: Examine the effectiveness of using wikis in facilitating teaching and learning Develop an instructional plan for incorporating wikis in the teaching of their specific subject area Develop an activity that will involve students using wikis in your specific subject area Build a wiki for use in teaching

Activity 2: Exploring the Concept Have ever heard of Wikipedia? How do you think Wikipedia is created? How reliable is the content on the Wikipedia site? Have you ever tried to edit content on Wikipedia?

Key Questions What is a wiki? How can wikis be incorporated into my lesson to facilitate teaching & learning?

What is a Wiki? A wiki is a web page or a collection of web pages that allows persons with access to modify or edit the content within these pages. It is a collaborative web space for creating new content on the web or editing content that has already been posted to that space.

Using Wikis in Teaching and Learning Teachers can use wikis for: Common planning with other teachers Developing open source texts and other resources Resource collection and sharing resources with other teachers As a place to post information/syllabus etc., for students

Using Wikis in Teaching and Learning Students can use wikis for: Group projects/assignments Creating glossaries Brainstorming Meeting online Building a group portfolio Writing a collective letter or other document

Using Wikis in Teaching and Learning Can you think of other ways in which you can use wikis in your class?

Activity 3: Building a Wiki For this activity, you will work in groups to build a wiki. Groups of 4 Choose a topic, any topic and build a wiki Team member A will write the introduction Team member B will add a page Team member C will also add a page Team member D will also add a page

Activity 4 Planning an instructional event for incorporating wikis in your class In your subject groups, use the Instruction Plan worksheet provided to create a plan for incorporating wikis in your lesson

Activity 5: Building a Wiki For this activity, you will build a wiki using Wetpaint Using the activities described in your instructional plan, build a wiki for your subject area

Activity 6: Wiki projects in schools Do you think you could start wiki projects in your schools? Do you think you could work with other schools to start wiki projects? What are some ideas for establishing wiki projects within your school or with other schools?

Activity 7 Sharing our wiki sites

Reflection & Evaluation Using the journal tool in the Mico LMS, write a brief reflection on the activities for this session. Which activity did you find most useful? Which activity did you find least useful? What, if anything, did you want more of? How will this activity influence how you integrate technology into your teaching?
