Collecting Notes SLUG – a title or topic that clearly identifies the specific bit of information that will be recorded on that card Same slug can be used more than once.

NOTES SLuG Index Cards Paraphrase a title/topic that clearly identifies the specific bit of information that will be recorded on the card It can be used more than once. Allow you to arrange the note cards in the order that you will present the information in your paper. Put in your own words. Avoid Plagiarism. Record “bare Bones” Rarely use complete sentence

Rare occasions to quote Lend Authority Loss of impact Research Based If a source is written by a well-known and/or highly reputable authority, you can lend authority to your own writing. If the quote would lose its meaning or impact if paraphrased If the research centers on a person or perhaps someone’s literary contributions, you might support a point quite effectively.

Special instructions when quoting Left out words Added words Speaker punctuation Make sure you can tell just exactly who it is that you are quoting. You may add words by placing them in brackets. Be sure to put quotation marks around copied information You may leave out words, but you must show that you have by using an ellipsis ( . . . ) If at end of sentence, there will be four dots.

SLUG Note Card At the bottom of every note card you will write the corresponding bibliography card number (the circled # from the document card) and the page number(s) the information was located. p. 18 Page # Source
