Post 1916 – Sinn Fein 1916-18 Results of the 1916 rising 500 killed, more injured, much damage Dubliners angry with rebels Martial law (2000 interned) 90 sentenced to death. 15 executed in Kilmainham Jail. Irish minds were changed. Home Rule finished.

Sinn Féin blamed Because the IRB was a secret organisation, not many people knew about it. The British government and newspapers wanted someone to blame however, so they choose Sinn Féin. Even though Sinn Féin had never argued for an Irish Republic and was not part of the 1916 Rising, they gathered all the support and sympathy left over afterwards. This made Sinn Féin very popular very quickly.

The Conscription Crisis 1918 – Britain needed every able solider at the end of WW1. The Prime Minister DAVID LLOYD GEORGE decided to conscript (force) young Irish men into military service. Nationalist protested at the idea. De Valera and other leaders were arrested. The war ended before the British enforced conscription so no soldiers were not needed. Sinn Féin got credit for stopping it anyway.

The 1918 General Election 73 seats for Sinn Fein Called their MPs Teachtaí Dála and refused to take seats. 1919 Dáil Éireann set up.
