1. The Easter Rising Shauna O’Hara.

2. Westminister. This is a picture of Westminister in London. At the time of the rising, Ireland was ruled by England and Westminister was where the parliament met.

3. Irish Republican Brotherhood. James Stephens and John O’Mahoney - the two men who set up the Irish Republican Brotherhood (I.R.B.) to try to get independence from England.

4. Howth and Kilcoole. Howth is in Co. Dublin and Kilcoole is in Co. Wicklow. Boats with guns arrived here for the I.R.B., but they were unsuccessful in their rebellion against the British.

5. John Redmond When World War 1 began in 1914, the I.R.B. split into two groups. This is John Redmond, the man who formed a group called the National Volunteers. They went to help Belgium, by fighting with Britian in World War 1.

6. Eoin Mc Neill He set up a group called the Irish Volunteers. They said we should attack England while all their soldiers were in the trenches in France.

7. Easter Monday The Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army and members of Cumann na mBan all went to Liberty Hall and they all marched outside it. The rebels then took over buildings around Dublin. Their headquarters was the G.P.O. Padraig Pearse read out the Proclamation to a puzzled crowd. They rose the Irish flag after this.

8. Tuesday the 25 th of April. The country was under martial law. The British used Dublin castle as their base.

9. Wednesday the 26 th of April. The rebels were outnumbered. Heavy fighting was going on at Mount Street Bridge.

10. Thursday the 27 th of April. Most of O’Connell Street was in flames. People living in O’Connell Street had to be evacuated. James Connolly was shot in the ankle in Middle Abbey Street.

11. Friday the 28 th of April. Clerys and the Imperial hotel collapsed. Rebels sang the soldiers song (now Amhráin na bhFiann). The rebels were forced to evacuate the G.P.O. as it was in flames.

12. Saturday the 29 th of April. Pearse agreed to surrender. Elizabeth O’Farrell walked through O’Connell Street with a white flag which means ‘surrender’. 400 people died and 2000 people were wounded in the Rising.

13. Joseph Plunkett At 1.30 am Grace Gifford was led into Kilmainham Gaol church. Joseph Plunkett was led into the chapel wearing handcuffs. They had 10 minutes together before he was executed.

14. Sinn Fein Had no support before 1916. Sinn Fein means ‘ourselves’. In the election of 1918 however, they got the most votes. They would not take their seats in London so they began Dáil Éireann in Dublin.

15. Women of 1916 The first Cumann nBan meeting was on the 2 nd of April 1914. Women provided aid for the families of the imprisoned and the killed during the Rising.

16. Countess Markieviez. She used to be called Constance Gore-Booth. She was born in Sligo in 1868 She married a Polish man called Count Casimir Markieviez. She was elected an MP in 1918 while in jail and later went on to become a Minister in the first Irish government.
