What’s our Attitude? Supreme Knight & Supreme Council State Deputy District Deputies/Council Grand Knights and Fraternal Leaders

Supreme Knight: State Deputies Meeting Year most challenging since becoming Supreme Knight Year of scandal within the Church Must have greater sense of urgency more than before Every priest, bishop questioning what happening Need allies/must find allies in their Knight Be there for them Be there for our Chaplains Be there for our seminarians

Supreme Knight Need to be mindful that many adversaries will be assessing: Volunteer hours up or down Membership up or down Charitable contributions up or down Doing good; but must do better Build a culture of recruiting in our councils On-Line membership preferred way of entry into our Order Build for future; ensure Order is increasing not decreasing

STATE DEPUTY MEETING “What Father McGivney laid out was not the principles of a men’s club or the principles of a secret society. It was a principled way of life for men to live their catholic faith. We are not just building columbianism, we are building Catholicism. Let’s think about being a Knight of Columbus like that. And if we do, we understand that we are not just (fraternal leaders). Is that not the spiritual genius of Father McGivney? To understand how to build a way of life for men that goes to the central core of what it means to be a catholic: charity, unity, brotherhood.”

Supreme Knight Attitude “We need to win hearts and minds, one person, one family, one community at a time. That is why the Knights of Columbus is so potentially powerful—when people see the good we do, the charity that evangelizes, they see the positive influence of the Catholic faith.” “...the Knights of Columbus has the courage to make a witness to charity and to practice fraternal outreach to those in need.” “We have a moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus.”

State Deputy Story Father McGivney’s Vision Attracting, recruiting, retaining a Catholic man & family; changing their lives and the lives of others Catholic mission bringing light of Christ to those we encounter In a world where people walk along and uninvolved Catholics despised and persecuted minority; proclaimed faith Doors closed jobs scarce; helped one another Catholics rely on own conscience; speak for authority, Pope, Bishops and Priests

State Deputy We do this for the good of the catholic man, his family We do this for the good of our Church, Pope, Bishops, priests and religious We do this for the good of our councils, districts, state and the Order We do this to bring the light of Christ to ALL those we encounter and enable others to do likewise We do all of this for God’s Glory and our neighbor’ good

DD & Fraternal Leaders attitude? Are we leading to grow our districts & councils? Are we offering membership to catholic men and their families? If not why, not? Has my district/council recruited any new members this year? Last year? How about my district? Are we losing more members than we are recruiting through suspensions, withdrawals or they just disappear? Is my council/are my councils active and vibrant in their parishes, communities by putting Faith in Action? Are our charitable donations & volunteer hours increasing to a goal of 5% Are we a reliable asset to our pastors and priests?

DD & Fraternal Leaders attitude? Are we connected with our Brothers & their families? Do we know their story? Are we there for them when they need us? Can they count on us? Are we promoting programs to help our members grow in their faith? Are members bored, disinterested? How are we perceived and how do we think we are perceived by our Brothers, families, parishes, communities, pastor ? Are we attracting, recruiting, retaining younger members? On track for Star Council?

United States and Canada Council Compliance Checklist Faith in Action United States and Canada Council Compliance Checklist Grand Knight – training; compliance dashboard access Program Director – training; compliance dashboard access Family Director – training; background check Community Director – training; background check Chief Squire Counselor – training; background check Adult Squire Counselor(s) – training; background check Now I turn to compliance with the Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program. Star Council Eligibility Key Points Leaving one or more of the council director roles vacant DOES NOT exempt a council from safe environment requirements. Councils must fill program director, family director and community director with members, who, along with the council’s grand knight, are willing to comply with all safe environment requirements Leaving one or more of these roles vacant disqualifies a council from Star Council eligibility. Now I turn to compliance with the Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program. We serve for God’s Glory and our Neighbors’ Good Why is this important? Lots of information & tools to achieve membership and program success If we don’t have an attitude that understands that our faith is under attack and we are losing faithful catholics as much today as in 1882; if we don’t have an attitude that we must recruit and enlist more Catholic men to grow in their faith by living their faith; if we don’t have an attitude that cultivates and grows in fraternity with our Brothers and their families’; if we don’t have an attitude that who we are and what we do by putting our faith in action is our call and mission as Catholics to be the Light of Christ to all we encounter and to help our neighbors and ourselves achieve eternal life; then nothing we present this weekend will matter. We must have the right attitude “Attitude reflects leadership, Captain.” Jay Doherty, Colorado State Deputy We serve for God’s Glory and our Neighbors’ Good
