Year 1 Maths Meeting For Parents

Numbers and place value Addition and subtraction Aim of the meeting – help you understand the expectations in Maths, how we teach it, and how you can support your child. Numbers and place value Addition and subtraction Multiplication and division Fractions Measurement Geometry These are the areas of maths we will cover in Year 1

Mastery We have a mastery approach to maths across the school. High expectations for every child • Few topics, greater depth • Number sense and place value come first • A research based curriculum • The use of objects and pictures before number and letters • Problem solving is central • Language and Communication lead to understanding • Challenge is provided through an increased depth, rather than acceleration of content Numbers stay small but we have a greater understanding of them

Symbols are abstract until you know what they mean.

Concrete representation Concrete- The DOING A child is first introduced to an idea or a skill by acting it out with real objects. This is a 'hands on' component using real objects and it is the foundation for conceptual understanding. Pictorial-The SEEING A child has sufficiently understood the hands-on experiences performed and can now relate them to representations, such as a diagram or picture of the problem. Abstract – The SYMBOLIC A child is now capable of representing problems by using mathematical notation, for example: 12 ÷ 2 = 6

Pictorial representation

Abstract representation 3 + 4 = 7 Symbolic stage Numbers, letters and symbols “I did it in my head” Most formal stage of mathematical understanding Efficient way of representing the maths The symbols don’t mean anything until you understand them

Reasoning Which is the odd one out? Why?

How can you help at home? Fluency is key – Number facts  Including subtraction facts as well.  Doubles and halves – Skip counting – Times tables  Practise, practise, practise!  Other activities can include: – Practise writing number formation – Match words to numbers  Think and talk like a mathematician

Numbers can be represented, using counters or drawing dots, on a ten frame. There are 5 blue butterflies.
