Honors Biology Chapter 7Section 3 Cell Boundaries
I. The Cell (aka Plasma) Membrane Overview  Cell membrane separates living cell from nonliving surroundings  Controls traffic in & out of the cell.
This is a Foldable. Use 4 sheets of paper. It should look like this
Chapter 7: Cells.  1) Regulates what goes in and out  (selectively permeable- some molecules too large or too strongly charged to cross while others.
Cell Membrane. Function of Cell Membrane  Separates the cell’s contents from materials outside the cell  Regulates what moves in and out of a cell 
The Cell Membrane 1 Cell membranes are composed of two phospholipid layers called a phosholipid bilayer. The cell membrane has two major functions: 1.

CELL MEMBRANE

The cell membrane is made of lipids Phospholipids Hydrophilic head Hydrophobic tails

Membrane is a lipid bilayer

Membrane is a lipid bilayer Allows membrane to interact with water inside and outside the cell

The cell membrane is fluid Constantly moving and flowing (video)

“Fluid mosaic” model Other molecules are attached to or embedded in the membrane.

“Fluid mosaic” model Other molecules are attached to or embedded in the membrane. Cholesterol – regulates how temperature affects membrane fluidity Peripheral proteins – membrane proteins that stick to the inside or outside of the membrane Integral proteins – membrane proteins that span the entire width of the membrane
