Presentation on theme: "What is the function of the cell membrane?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What is the function of the cell membrane?
Put homework out on desk Homework tonight: HP#5 answer reading questions

2 What should enter or leave the cell?
In your groups make a list of … 4 things that should be allowed to enter a cell 4 things that should be allowed to leave a cell 4 things that should be kept out of a cell

3 The Cell Membrane He has two main functions:
Protection – protects the cell from the outside environment Regulation – controls what can enter and exit the cell It’s selectively permeable, meaning it only allows certain things to enter or leave the cell

4 What’s it made of?

5 Components of the Cell Membrane
LIPIDS: Phospholipids make up the majority of the cell membrane Hydrophilic head made out of phosphates (Phospho) Hydrophobic tail made out of fatty acids (Lipid) To protect the hydroPHOBIC tails from water, they form a bilayer which keeps the tails huddled inside and the water loving heads outside.

6 Hydrophobic vs. Hydrophilic
What does phobic mean? What does philic mean?

7 Components of the Cell Membrane

9 Components of the Cell Membrane
PROTEINS: Membrane proteins bring materials into the cell and receive signals from outside the cell Integral proteins: help things move into the cell which are either too large to do it themselves or they have a charge and can’t get in Peripheral proteins: located inside the cell membrane and receive signals from other cells by attaching to the lipid bilayer membrane

10 Components of the Cell Membrane
CARBOHYDRATES: in the membrane these are attached to proteins or lipids and their antenna help cells identify or recognize other cells

11 Label and color your own cell membrane
Your Turn! Label and color your own cell membrane
