Daily life revolved around the village church and the Christian calendar. Women were seen as weaker than men by the church, yet many Christians revered Mary, the mother of Jesus, and even dedicated churches to her. Listen to the Witness History audio. Then read aloud the main idea for each subheading in this section and show the related visuals. After listening to the Witness History audio, ask, “What do you learn about English pilgrims from this selection?” (Many English believed that saints helped them; they wished to visit relics of religious heroes.) Benedict wrote rules to regulate monastic life. Monasteries and convents offered health and educational services, as well as lodging for pilgrims. The church developed its own body of laws, called canon law. It held rulers in check with the penalties of excommunication and interdiction. Often it used its power to end warfare among nobles. 2 of 7

Pope Gregory VII led a push for reform and limited secular influences on the church. Friars and Dominican nuns joined the pope in the reform movement. Listen to the Witness History audio.
