Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 A.D. Church was unifying force during the chaotic time of Western Europe Popes lived in Rome Popes began to believe that they had more power than the king

Could not receive the sacraments or a Christian burial A noble could face an interdict if he opposed the Church Church demanded fighting stop between Friday through Sunday, which helped feudal warfare decrease
