Critically Critiquing IRSL – FALL 2017 Nov. 27, 2017

Evaluation of Your Poster Criteria That YOU you will use to assess your peers That WE will use to grade you A. Content 1. Clarity 2. Logic 3. Flow 4. Quality of visual presentation B. Presenter 1. Knowledgeable 2. Clear 3. Confident 4. Interesting C. Other comments

Visual Presentation A. Content 1. Clarity – is the material in each section obvious? Includes the ability to tell sections apart Is text understandable? Easy to read quickly Use whitespace to do facilitate it 2. Logic – is it cohesive? Can you understand the overall message – 1 or 2 things? Be careful you are not trying to fit in too much Is title, all text, data, conclusions accentuating this point?

Visual Presentation (cont.) 3. Flow - a big factor in grade Overall way the information is visually provided Is the poster intuitive? 4. Quality of visual presentation More subjective, but fits with all of the above Does the whole package work toward your goal? Title, pictures and figures, color scheme Nothing distracting on the poster No stretched photos Can you tell the student spent time on the poster or was it thrown together last minute?

*Know your poster inside and out – anything on it could be questioned* Presenter 1. Knowledgeable Does presenter understand background and topic? Was the paper and material presented conveyed well? *Know your poster inside and out – anything on it could be questioned* 2. Clear Was the main meaning conveyed without confusion? Lack of extraneous details Background is important

Presenter 3. Confident Material = poster and background information Did the presenter act like s/he knew material Material = poster and background information Were questions answered confidently or with hesitation? 4. Interesting Was the presenter interested in the material? Did s/he help you to become interested in the material? Was the presenter enthusiastic or monotone?

How does this critique factor into your grade? You will complete two peer review critiques of classmates No matter what you put on your grading sheet, it does not affect the grade of the classmate you are critiquing Your critique determines YOUR grade.

Critiquing Grade for IRSL You should exhibit clarity and logic in the critique you write Using the poster, describe the features to explain the grade you give Be prepared to back your assessment with examples or evidence Write clearly and in complete thoughts If we do not understand your review, it will reflect poorly on your grade

This poster was terrible!!! Critique Examples Not helpful Helpful This poster was terrible!!! The poster was missing the titles of the graphs, which made it hard to fully understand the data. The zebra stripe background was distracting. The student did not define the abbreviation (ABC) in the poster and could not remember what it meant.

It was good. Critique Examples Not helpful Helpful I loved the layout of the poster; it was very organized and easy to follow. The presentation was average, but the presenter was not confident. I saw other oral presentations that were more memorable. I was impressed with the presenter’s knowledge of diabetes, but that was not reflected in the poster. The hot chocolate study break on Reading Day? The oral presentation? The poster?

If my grade depends on me, how do I practice? Start by self-evaluating Look at your own poster (midi-print) This requires a day or two away from it Try this now if you took any time away from the poster over the break Review your poster again this weekend If you don’t understand an element of your poster, its certain that your judges will have issues too!

Self-Critique Are the colors attractive and helpful? Does it flow well? Can you follow it without being able to read the words? Pictures (excessive?), text (can it be decreased?) Too much or little white space Is something distracting Is EVERYTHING on the poster necessary to help with the visual appeal? Make changes if necessary

Look at other posters Notice good techniques and note things that do not work If instructors give ideas to improve your work, you should make the changes You should NOT copy other posters, but use ideas to inspire you Have peers give you feedback
