1 Describing Motion Newton’s Laws. 2 First we need to define the word FORCE: The cause of motion (what causes objects to move) Two types of forces –Pushes.
Chapter 4 Why things move as they do. 4.1 Force: Why things accelerate Force: Any external influence that causes a body to accelerate Friction: A force.
Forces and Motion Unit Vocabulary. Newton’s 1 st law Law states: An object at rest stays at rest. An object in motion stays in motion unless an unbalanced.

How can we describe how objects move?. The law of BALANCED FORCES  Objects at rest tend to stay at rest.  Objects in motion tend to stay in motion.
Forces Pages 188 to 191. Forces Force - a push or a pull, measured in Newtons (N) Contact Force – is a push or a pull one object applies to another object.
Forces & Motion. Motion A change in the position of an object Caused by force (a push or pull)
Forces  A force is a PUSH or a PULL.  Described by: 1. Its strength 2. The direction in which it acts  Measured in: Newtons (N)  Measured by: Spring.

Describing Motion Newton’s Laws. First we need to define the word FORCE: A push or a pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of the object.
Notes: Motion and Forces A.What is motion? 1. An object is in motion if it involves a change in position relative to a reference point. 2. Distance is.

Newton’s Laws of Motion Inertia, Calculating Acceleration, and Action/Reaction Pairs

Objectives: Learn new vocabulary to describe the motion of objects Learn Newton’s three laws of motion Use Newton’s law to describe motion of objects

Vocabulary Review: Quiz otw Motion – a change in the position of an object Distance – how far an object travels as it moves from one location to another Displacement – how far an object is from some earlier position, regardless of the path it took Force – a push or a pull between two objects

New Vocabulary: Quiz otw Inertia – the tendency objects have to maintain their state of motion Gravity – the force between two objects with mass Friction – the pulling force that works against an object’s motion to slow it or prevent it from moving Normal force – pushing interaction between two objects touching, always acts perpendicular to supporting surface

The difference between mass and weight Weight is a force – your weight is the force you are applying to the surface of the earth Mass is how much matter is in an object – the more mass an object has, the more its gravitational force Acceleration due to gravity – on Earth is 9.8 m/s2

Newton’s First Law An object in motion, will stay in motion, and an object at rest will stay at rest, unless acted on by an unbalanced force

Newton’s Second Law The amount of acceleration depends on the mass of the object and the net force acting on the object F = ma

Newton’s Second Law F = ma If no net force acts on an object, it will not accelerate. If a net force acts on an object, it will accelerate The direction of the acceleration will always be in the direction of the net force …………………..

Newton’s Third Law For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
