True/False Game Session 7 LGBTQ+ True/False Game Session 7

Disclaimer: This game is meant to be a fun way to test your knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community and to maybe learn something new. It’s meant to be an intro and by no means includes all the terms and labels that are out there to describe people’s gender identity and sexual orientation!

True or False? All men who identify as gay love shopping and all women who identify as lesbian play sports.

False These are stereotypes. Just as with gender stereotypes, making assumptions about people based on their sexual orientation can be harmful and lead to conclusions being drawn that just aren’t true!

Talking about LGBTQ+ identities increases the chances of becoming gay. True or False? Talking about LGBTQ+ identities increases the chances of becoming gay.

FALSE Talking about LGBTQ+ identities allows us to debunk the myths, to better understand one another, to learn to respect differences and include more people in the discussion.

True or False? Being gay is a choice.

FALSE People choose to use labels based on their comfort level, but who they are is not an active choice. People don’t choose to be gay, they just are!

True or False? Blue is a male colour and pink is a female colour; and always have been!

FALSE 100 years ago, in European culture, all babies wore white, and blue was a feminine color! This is a good example about how clutures can shift!

True or False? You can tell someone’s sexual orientation or gender from the way they look/act/speak.

FALSE Sometimes people use their dress and actions as a way to express themselves, and that can include their sexual orientation and gender, but not everyone expresses themselves the same way! Ultimately, someone’s identity can only be defined by that person, and the only way to know someone’s sexual orientation or gender is to have them tell you.

LGBTQ+ people exist all over the world and in many cultures. True or False? LGBTQ+ people exist all over the world and in many cultures.

TRUE Different cultures have many different examples of LGBTQ+ identities. Some cutures are more accepting of LGBTQ+ identies, and others not so much. Regardless, there are queer people all over the world!

A boy wearing a dress means he’s queer or trans* True or False? A boy wearing a dress means he’s queer or trans*

FALSE Any person can wear any clothes and they are just that, clothes! Sometimes clothes are used to express one’s gender or sexual orientation but ultimately clothes are not an indicator of either.

All LGBTQ+ people “have” to come out. True or False? All LGBTQ+ people “have” to come out.

FALSE Coming out is a big decision and the process is different for everyone. Everyone has the right to choose to come out in their own time and in their own way. Some LGBTQ+ people choose not to come out because it may be too risky or they may not feel supported.

The way people identify their gender or sexual orientation can change. True or False? The way people identify their gender or sexual orientation can change.

TRUE While people’s sexual orientation is not a ‘phase’, sexual orientation can be fluid! Sometimes an identity fits someone at one point in their lives and then no longer fits in another point, or maybe it took a while for the person to find the perfect fit. At the end of the day, someone’s identity can only be determined by that person.

Gender neutral bathrooms are needed for a space to be fully inclusive. True or False? Gender neutral bathrooms are needed for a space to be fully inclusive.

TRUE Gender neutral bathrooms allow trans* and non-binary folks to feel comfortable in the spaces they’re in. Besides, having gender neutral bathrooms isn’t really that hard, most people have them in their homes!

True or False? If a woman is dating another woman, it’s safe to assume she’s a lesbian.

FLASE Someone’s sexual orientation is not determined by the person they are dating. She could identify as a lesbian, but also could identify as bisexual, pansexual or any other identity where she is attracted to more than one gender. The safest bet is not to assume!

Canada legalized same sex marriage in 2005? True or False? Canada legalized same sex marriage in 2005?

TRUE In 2005 Canada became the first country outside of Europe and 4th county in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.

True or False? 20% of millennials in North America identify as part of the rainbow community.

TRUE In a recent study conducted by GLAAD 20% of respondents 18-35 identified somewhere in the LGBTQ+ community.

True or False? The idea that genders exist outside of the female/male binary is very recent.

FALSE Examples of people who identity as genders other than female or male can be seen throughout history. For example, before settlers arrived, many North American Indigenous cultures recognized people who did not fit into the gender binary. The term Two-spirit is used today by some Indigenous people to describe their sexual, gender and/or spiritual identity.
