Current Practice and Plans for the Future GP Tutor Engagement: Current Practice and Plans for the Future Dr K. J. Harrison

Aims What should we do? What do we do? What do our GP Tutors say about what we do? What are our plans moving forward?

What should we do? ‘making sure that educators have the necessary knowledge and skills for their role, and get the support and resources they need to deliver effective education and training’ Promoting Excellence, GMC 2016 Theme 4: Supporting Educators professional development and training resources …to meet the requirements of the training programme deal effectively with concerns or difficulties educators face enough time given in job plans consistent approach to education and training The majority of Promoting Excellence is commensurate with Tomorrows Doctors although the requirement about dealing with concerns and difficulties is completely new. I am only looking at how we engage with established tutors and not looking at our selection or induction of new tutors. All the requirements are: Educators must be selected against suitable criteria and receive an appropriate induction to their role, access to appropriately funded professional development and training for their role, and an appraisal against their educational responsibilities. Trainers must have enough time in job plans to meet their educational responsibilities so that they can carry out their role in a way that promotes safe and effective care and a positive learning experience. Educators must have access to appropriately funded resources they need to meet the requirements of the training programme or curriculum. Organisations must support educators by dealing effectively with concerns or difficulties they face as part of their educational responsibilities. Organisations must support educators to liaise with each other to make sure they have a consistent approach to education and training, both locally and across specialties and professions. Tomorrow’s Doctors, GMC 2009. ‘Developing teachers and trainers in undergraduate medical education’ Gave advice on staff development and training. Included examples of practice from UK Medical Schools in 2009

What do we do? 150 GP Tutors approximately Induction visit for new GP Tutors GP Tutor Course (GPTC) Runs three times a year at School of Medicine Includes three workshops on various educational topics Contractual requirement for Tutor to attend once every three years Held locally in North Wales and Blackpool once per year Honorary Clinical Lecturer Quality Assurance Process 150 tutors spread in a geographical area covering up to Blackpool and across to North Wales. Induction visit done by experienced CCT to go through the requirements of the course, review the practice environment, discuss any concerns, create a ‘point of contact’ within the unit additional to the administrative support. GP Tutor Course : same course run three times. Content based on previous years evaluation results Topics covered include’ student in difficulty’, ‘how to give good feedback’, ‘how to be a GP Role model’ Honorary Clinical Lecturer: Need to be tutor for 3 years and passed a quality visit (incorporates feedback from students). To date ZERo GP Tutors have applied for this!! Quality Assurance Routine Quality Assurance Visit every 5 years (Dr Ballinger and Jan Machin) Annual Quality Data Review Formal student evaluation reports via Evasys Requirements and recommendations previously set by the University (e.g. at previous quality visit) Placement Self-Assessment Document and supporting evidence Done remotely and visit arranged if indicated

What do our GP Tutors Say? Review of GPTC Evaluation form Data collected from 2017/18 GPTC Qualitative data analysed thematically Questions included were: Were the pre-event details satisfactory Could they be improved in any way Were your expectations and learning objectives met today How well did the facilitators run the workshop What is/are your main learning outcome(s) from today Is there anything we could do to improve the event in the future What other topics would you like to be covered in future events

Results 81% survey response rate (51/63)

Results Free Text responses were coded and themes emerged Four main themes identified: Curriculum changes and content Eportfolio support Sharing of experiences and good practice between tutors School contact and support information
