Reading Reflection Week of 11/17/2014 Sheri Collier Reading Reflection Week of 11/17/2014

Key take aways: Hornberger & Link Translanguaging – how bilingual students communicate and make meaning by drawing on both languages. Moving back and forth fluidly for interactions to be more meaningful Continua of biliteracy – visual chart to help understanding “that a child’s first language skills must become well developed to ensure that their academic and linguistic performance in the second language is maximized” Standardized tests in English only

Key take aways Guide for Educators (more like a BOOK) Translanguaging – language practices of bilingual Not code switching Language is action and practice All students will benefit Overall the guide seemed very useful but overwhelming. I appreciate that is discussed CCSS Loved the ease of it for teachers to have and make a difference in a classroom right away.

Questions for discussion Is there a difference with language, proficiency and vocabulary development in students that have translanguaging as an opportunity vs students that keep their languages separate? Do other countries have “state” tests and if so, what languages do they use?
