Warm Up During what years did WWI take place? What countries fought in WWI? What event sparked the beginning of WWI?

The Beginning of War Friend: Want to hang out tonight? Me: Can’t, I got plans. Friend: What plans? Me:

Causes of WWI Nationalism- Pride for one’s country rises Imperialism- competition for colonies (territories) Militarism- Industrialization led to military growth. Diplomatic failures- No continent wide unity Alliance System- Divisions between countries

The Balkan Peninsula Austria and Serbia become embroiled in conflict over the peninsula as the Ottoman Empire declines. Both trying to assert control over region.

The Assassination June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated in Sarajevo, by a Serbian member of the “Black Hand” Assassins were throughout the route using bombs and pistols Gavrilo Princip

The War Begins

VS The Sides of War Triple Entente Triple Alliance Neutral Countries France Britain Russia Serbia Triple Alliance Germany Austria-Hungry Ottoman Empire VS Neutral Countries Spain Switzerland Netherlands

Military Strategy Invasion of Belgium brought in Great Britain. German Schlieffen Plan- “two-front” war, attack France then Russia. Russia would take more time to mobilize. Enter through Belgium Invasion of Belgium brought in Great Britain.

The Western Front Schlieffen Plan does not work, stalemate across France. Germans driven 60 miles back towards the Western Front. First Battle of the Marne- defeat of Germans lead to a drawn out war around France.

Trenches Soldiers fought each other from Trenches. Between the trenches, “no man’s land” Inside the trenches- dead bodies stacked to stay above the mud. Rats and disease common throughout the trenches.

Battle on the Eastern Front Russian Enters(1916): Now Germany had to fight on two fronts. Russia was short on artillery, but had plenty of soldiers. Two front wars never allow for a full assault on either side. Russian Revolution sparks, they leave the war (1917)

The United States Enters War 1915 Lusitania Sunk 128 Americans killed. Angers US but still not entering “European War” German unrestricted submarine warfare responsible

Zimmerman telegram Caused the US to enter war on the Allied side. (Triple Entente) From Germany to Mexico: Keep America out of war and Germany will help you reclaim territory
